Does anyone know what new enclosures are coming to London and Whipsnade zoo in 2016?

I know London zoo is opening "Land of the Lions" In spring but what about Whipsnade

Aren't Whipsnade supposed to be building a new Elephant house ?

Indeed, though more of an extension and improvement to the existing barns. Though not advertised as a "new exhibit," the barns will be a significant upgrade to the group's management and welfare. Projected opening is for September 2016.

Regarding anything "new," there is, of course, an empty wolf enclosure to fill!

Thanks Nisha. I haven't been to Whipsnade recently, but Whipsnade without its wolves is like Howletts without its tigers or Slimbridge its flamingos. Such an iconic, historic species. Hope they fill the enclosure again soon, if not with wolves then with something else.

How do we even know that hunting dogs are coming to whipsnade?

As far as I know, we don't. It just seems really logical - the hunting dogs at London having given birth to a huge litter of pups and maybe needing more space in 6 months time and the enclosure on the edge of 'Africa' at Whipsnade standing empty now...

Does anyone think that whipsnade will get rid of the passage through Asia this year, because when I go to whipsnade it is always closed, if they do close it then their will be a huge space of land to make new parts of the zoo,

they have already got a Europe, Africa and Asia part, it would be amazing if they had a Arctic Part to the zoo with Seals (Even though they have sea lions in the centre of the zoo), Arctic foxes and, they could move the Reindeer from their old enclosure in the middle of the woods, or even Add a China area to the zoo with Giant pandas and that could be the main attraction at the zoo, but they would need a lot of money and a lot of time to make new parts of the zoo or even buy more land for the zoo. but it will be nice to see that some time in the future.

While they may choose to use that land differently at some point, Passage Thru Asia has been open on all my visits for the last few years (including just a couple of weeks ago). Only very bad weather or veterinary reasons close it.

Put it this way; it was still open during the gale-force winds which battered Whipsnade last week as Storm Frank hit the United Kingdom :p I know this, as a fair few of us were pottering around the collection at the time!

I would say pottering is the wrong word trying to stand upright and not get blown over Bison Hill would be closer!!!!!

Thank goodness ye made it all out alive and in good time to give us an update on what is going on at Whipsnade! :D

Hope you all had a good time (at least you all had dry feet!).

By the end of the day, we did not have dry feet :p but we *did* have a very good day.

We don't know what will go in the wolf enclosure for definite, but all reference to the 'european' wolves has been removed, including the more expensive wild whipsnade plaques. Whatever goes in there next, I think it's safe to say it will be something different.

I just saw on the London Zoo thread that the Geoffrey's marmosets have been transferred to Whipsnade, out of interest does anyone know where they will go?

The zoo will be launching a "Jurassic Experience" in the summer, with the arrival of life-size animatronic dinosaurs.

Something to fill the now defunct wolf enclosure no doubt!

Despair followed by more despair! Not my zoo doing it as well surely!!? Live animals are clearly going out of fashion!
