with 2016 over, we can look forward to new and exciting Developments at Whipsnade zoo this year.

First the New Elephant Conservation Centre is due to open in the Spring

The African Hunting Dogs are Returning to the Zoo in Easter, with a New Exhibit where the former Wolf enclosure was.

Next (I think this is 2017) The Sealions will be given New Accommodation and a New Exhibit.

Finally the Grey Wolves will Return to the Zoo and will be given a New Enclosure.

Getting ahead of yourself with those last two statements Max! Both sealion and wolf projects are for the longer term, I'd be very surprised if anything happens this year.

And, of course, Phase 2 and 3 of the Cloisters project has yet to happen!

with the Grey Wolves I did ask Whipsnade last year when they will be returning and they said 2017 or early 2018.

And so was the Butterfly House Phase 1? And has whipsnade announced what Phase 2 and 3 will be?

There are plans for 2 and 3, though no timetable- aquarium and invertebrates respectively. With regards the former, the arrival of a group of arapaima is imminent I believe.

Thanks for setting up a 2017 thread for Whispande Max!

it does sound as though it will be an exciting year on both ZSL sites.

With the Discovery Centre being shut, am I right in thinking exhibits will be displayed elsewhere around the Zoo? For example will the Saki Monkeys and Dwarf Mongoose be displayed somewhere else?

Yes the Dwarf Mongoose went to London to be added as a very Asian side exhibit in Land of Lions!!!

ah right I see, sorry to be a pain but any idea when this was? When I went to have a look at the new Lion enclosure I don't remember seeing any Dwarf Mongoose...probably didn't realise they were there!

If you can find the bit of theming that is the 'ticket office' it forms part of their enclosure. They were definitely there in September 2016 but as that was our first look at Land of the Lions I don't know when they actually arrived.

Ah my bad, I just didn't notice them! Im sure I had seen Dwarf Mongoose at Whipsnade since the lions opened but maybe im mistaken!

The Dwarf Mongooses were still on show at Whipsnade when I went in July 2016, by which time Land of the Lions had been open some time, so I don't think it can be as simple as the whole group moving over as one. Doesn't mean the London animals weren't from Whipsnade though, of course.

I think the only visible remnants of the Discovery Centre will be the Saki's, as they have access to an outside enclosure. Whether they remain in the long term is anyone's guess, however they are a good breeding pair.

The bird section has added a group of red-billed hornbill to the flying demonstration for the new season.

however they are a good breeding pair.

Last time I visited (November time) it was just the two males!! The matamatas, Utila spiny-tailed iguana, some species of snake (can't remember what exactly) and yellow-footed tortoises were also still visible to the public.

Quick question, does anyone know the rough size of the lemur island?

Would any of the Whipsnade zoo visitors know how the Gaur group is going atm!
