Will be visiting very shortly was wondering after looking at there map the area as to where all the deer seem to be looks car only area does the bus run round this area or is there any other way of seeing the deer without using a car.

The miniature railway runs along the inner edge of the paddock - otherwise without a car you're limited to views from the end of the paddock near the flamingos or across the Przewalski's Horse paddock (these are not quite as poor views as they might sound, though!). Last time I was there some/all of the Hog Deer were in the corner paddock opposite the pelican lake/cafe area, so make sure to check there.

The bus doesn't go through the drive through area. The deer won't be seen close up I'm afraid, Other than the Pere David's possibly or the Hog deer which are labelled in a corner paddock near the tigers.

If you look on ZTL, the majority of the birds are either off show or part of the bird show.

On show areas are :
Penguins - Rockhopper & African

Caribbean flamingo

Lake by main Cafe - Pelican, White Stork & various geese

Aviary adjoining cafe - Chough, little egret, white faced whistling duck and possibly a species of Ibis still.

Owl wood - Snowy, Ural, Great Grey & Northern Hawk owl

Stanley Crane and Darwin's Rhea either side of road between elephants & butterfly house.

Manchurian Crane just along from Sloth Bears

Think that's about it, though there may still be Emu in the paddock to the right at the end of the drive by the Hippo pools ( behind kudu & impala paddock.

we was at whipsnade on sunday the emu was right next to the red panda , hope that helps :-)

Bear in mind that, owing to the avian flu outbreak, some of the birds may be off-exhibit. When I was there less than two weeks ago:-

The pelicans, geese etc had been removed from Lake Daedalus (the lake near the main cafe) although there were still plenty of wild mallards, coots and moorhens to be seen on the lake.

The flamingoes did not have access to their outdoor pool either although they were still visible through the window into their indoor accommodation.

When is the elephant new home opening for sure 11th or 12th April?? As I want to visit and see the grand opening...... thanks

I saw four emu in this enclosure today....

Did you notice what is in the (ex?) Onager paddock by the Rhinos? Have the Onagers really left and any sign yet of the Gaur/Blackbuck/Nilgai set-up that I believe may replace them?

There is a solitary onager at Whipsnade which is still occupying the paddock near the Indian rhinos.

There is no indication yet of a mixed exhibit for gaur, nilgai and blackbuck.

I was under that impression but of course plans may have changed again now. But a single Onager in residence still sounds like a paddock waiting for a changeover.

What gave you that impression?

Female I believe, don't know the age.

Yes, the latest ZSL Animal Inventory only lists only one onager, a female. (The inventories for the previous three years listed one male and two female onagers.)

I take it the Onager mixing didn't work? That's a shame!

Sorry, I am a bit confused here. What “onager mixing” are you referring to?
