I certainly remember the Hunting Dogs in that enclosure. But not Hyaenas. What a display, the like of which they will(IMO) never have again.

Sadly, you are probably right, though there is no reason they couldn't!
Some of the antelope (e,g. sitatunga, nilgai and scimitar-horned oryx) breed regularly at Whipsnade.
The impala are a bachelor group so obviously will not breed.
Currently (unless there have been any recent changes since the latest ZSL Animal Inventory was published) the blackbuck, bongo, waterbuck, kudu and Nile lechwe are all females. It would be nice if males were acquired for some of these species….
I was sure there was a male blackbuck - has he died?

Just a quick note, its interesting that on the new Whipsnade map it has Yak in the old onager paddock.

The maps seem to get worse and show fewer animals every time!
Overall I don't think the design or details are that bad, think it could do with showing where more animals are though
No, when male lions are neutered they lose their manes or the ability to gain a mane. The pride at Whipsnade now consists of females Kachanga and Mashaka-Lila, and four adult offspring; neutered sons Kato, Toto, Neo and daughter Kia. So three of the current six are males but since they are neutered they have no manes.
Just back and the onager is no longer there,could not see it anywhere else in the park so can only guess it has moved on. The signs are up for the yak now but no sign of them moving in just yet.
Are the Yaks having a new enclosure built for their needs on the site of the old onager enclosure or will they just be moved into the paddock?
I would assume just a paddock move. It's a good use for that paddock, wonder why they are being moved from the passage thru Asia
I'm afraid I have to disagree! Replacing the Onager with a domesticated species already held elsewhere in the zoo is not something I can applaud! Whipsnade should be adding species year on year, not losing them! There have been just a couple of good years where several new species were added in the last 10 years ( the European area about 7 years ago and a couple of years ago when 4 new antelope species were brought in).
I really hope the loss of species doesn't become a trend like at some other zoos!
How many yak does the zoo currently hold?
According to the most recent ZSL Animal Inventory, 2.6 as at 1st January 2017.
Feel this is really good move as the yaks are currently so hard to view,even when driving through passage through asia they are often a distance away. Would love to know what happened to the onagar if anyone finds out.
Yeah the Yaks are hard to see at the best of times!

She has gone to join a breeding group, Whipsnade was down to a single specimen, it makes sense for the species.
Fair enough, but I guess some of us have greater expectations than others for what Whipsnade is capable of holding, it should be the best collection in the UK as space isn't an issue! Only Chester should be able to challenge it as number one.
