ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade Zoo 2018

On my last visit there were'nt that many Roan left (3/4?)

The most recent ZSL animal inventory lists only two roan antelope, both males, as at 1st January 2018.

On my last few visits the Gaur have been in the former Black Rhino paddock and the Gemsbok in the adjoining paddock. So I assume (hope!) the Gaur are still in that paddock

Indeed, I first saw the gaur out in the old black rhino paddock (which had previously housed the gemsbok) in November of last year. They were still there in April and they make a superb exhibit in that enclosure.

They really do!

Well now the Gemsbok have moved there is no African species in between the Gaur and the main Asian area

Still got the Squirrel monkeys, Caribbean flamingo and Californian sea lions though! ;)

It’s a shame the zoo didn’t persevere with Black rhino. I always thought it was exciting that a collection could hold 3 rhino species all at once!

They did not have good success with Black rhino in the latter years of keeping them. Lost two females(one very soon after arrival from Berlin) with no calves produced and so sent away their last male Quinto who had come from Chester. I think they just gave up with them after this poor record which contrasted with better results from the other two species.

Visited this afternoon, had a great time.

Not much new to report, however there were three Scimitar Horned Oryx in the old Gaur paddock (I presume they have either arrived or may be leaving the collection), The gemsbok looked great in the White Rhino paddock and the Nilgai herd is looking very impressive! Will post some photos later.

On a side note, a keeper had to redirect a car that had driven down to the Giraffes. There are signs so I don't know why people drive wrong way around the Zoo!

Visited today and noticed that the tiger pool was empty and then saw the attached sign. Seems like the new female has been a successful introduction and hope to see some cubs later in the year.ZSL Whipsnade tiger sign.jpg

It says "We're expecting to hear the pitter-patter of tiny tiger paws soon, so we've made some changes to the tigers' habitat in preparation."
Thanks for that - I've just put it in the gallery for Whipsnade but I'm away from home with slow internet at the moment! Didn't see a bison calf but did manage to see the yak calf and Przewalski's horse foal along with a very recently (less than an hour) born fallow deer fawn and a Chinese water deer fawn in Passage Through Asia
