maybe there's also a difference to the cheetahs as to whether they can see, or only hear Lions, i.e. hearing them might make them less apprehensive than actually seeing them every day. The poor cheetahs at London Zoo used to be housed right opposite the cages of the Lions and Tigers, just a few yards away.
At Whipsnade, the breeding runs of the Cheetahs were a long way away from the lions.
Apparently the 3 cheetahs that used to be at South Lakes have now been moved down to Whipsnade for the new exhibit. Have the new cheetahs arrived from the breeding centre in Asia yet because i think the South Lakes cheetahs are just their until the new ones come. Once the new cheetahs arrive the former south lakes cheetahs will be dispersed around europe.
I assume the South Lakes cheetahs will stay as the South African subspecies was meant for the visitor facilities/exhibit, while the cheetahs of the North African subspecies coming in from UAE will be in the off-show breeding compound. The South Africans were purposely not for breeding!
I have to retract the non-breeding bit. The South Africans (2.1) from South Lakes are on a temp loan to Whipsnade and will later on be sent on to breeding positions elswhere within the EEP. Just Whipsnade will not be doing anything with them breedingwise ....
