House Names
The following house names of Whipsnade bred calves have been revealed:
0.1 Aneena (2004-2006) = Emelia
1.0 Euan (2004-2017) = Toomai
0.1 Leelee (2007-2009) = Bets
1.0 Donaldson (2008-2009) = Riddle
0.1 Donna (2009) = Geetha
1.0 George (2010) = Ned
I was interested to know the meaning behind a few of these names:
Geetha (house name) is a Hindu name meaning “scared song.”
Toomai (house name) is the name of a young elephant handler in Toomai of the Elephants by Rudyard Kipling.
George (media name) is not simply a royal name as I’d assumed. I’d seen the full name (George Ketchum) on the elephant database and often wondered who or what a ‘Ketchum’ was. Well, George Ketchum was the founder of Ketchum Inc, a public relations company which later merged with Pleon to create Ketchum Pleon. In 2010, their deputy CEO was the successful bidder in a naming auction, which saw the calf named after the company’s founder.
