Meet Zuri and Araali - two white lions that have just moved to Darwin | NT News

White lion fever as African cub brothers arrive in Northern Territory from Tasmania - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
8 August 2014

Two African white lion cubs should feel more at home in their new Northern Territory climate than their previous home in chilly Tasmania.

Zuri and Araali, 13-month-old brothers, travelled from the Zoodoo Wildlife Park in Tasmania.

Zoodoo Wildlife Park manager Trevor Cuttriss said there were fewer than 300 white lions in the world and they no longer existed outside of captivity.

Mr Cuttriss looked after the pair from birth after bringing their parents to Tasmania from South Africa four-and-a-half years ago.

He said Darwin's Crocodylus Park would be their permanent home.

"The climate's lovely for them, they'll think they're back home," he said.

"They're part of a huge breeding program, which is very important for the species with only a few hundred left in the world.

"These are always going to be a captive-bred animal, there's none in the wild, they're extinct."

White lions have a short life span - they can live for up to 10 years in the wild and about 15 years in captivity.

Zuri and Araali each weigh about 100kg and when fully grown, they will tip the scales at 300kg.

Giovanna Webb, Crocodylus Park special projects manager, said there had been a lot of anticipation about the cubs' arrival.

"We have been planning this for a while, but we were keeping it a big secret until they actually arrived," she said.

"It's a wonderful day, it's a party for the zookeepers. They are the ones, they live and breathe for the animals."

In the African language Swahili, Zuri means strength of thunder and Araali means bold and handsome.

I wonder if they have built a new enclosure for them, or if they have replaced something else? When I was there a couple of months ago there was one lion enclosure with an adult pair, and two tiger enclosures with one in each. Unless they are going to rotate animals on display they will have had to build a new exhibit for these two.

"Crocodylus is now the seventh Australian zoo with white lions:"

National Zoo; Mogo Zoo; Darling Downs Zoo; Mansfield Zoo; Zoodoo Wildlife Park; Altina Wildlife Park; Crocodylus Park

Most of these only hold males or older non breeding pairs - Mogo and ZooDoo breed theirs, National have an old pair and bachelor males, Altina have an old pair and Mansfield and now Crocodylus have spare males, Darling Downs have a pair that haven't yet bred?

is the following all correct (anyone)? I'm not sure on the pair at Canberra - were they imported?

*Mogo Zoo – 1.2 imported in 2004 from South Africa (many bred since)

*National – 6 males from Mogo in 2008 – was there also 1.1 imported 2008 or 2009? (the ones called Jake and Mishka)

*Zoodoo – 2.2 imported late 2009 from South Africa (in collaboration with DDZ) (two litters since)

*DDZ – 1.1 in early 2010 from Zoodoo (leaving them with 1.1 at the time) (one cub bred)

*Mansfield – 2 males from National Zoo in 2012 (2 of the 6 National had got in 2008 from Mogo)

*Altina – 1.1 from Mogo in 2012 (two of the original imports from 2004)

*Crocodylus – 2 males from Zoodoo in 2014

Altina wildlife park's "old pair" of white lions gave birth to 4 Cubs on the 1st November 2014! (2:2)
