Werribee Open Range Zoo white rhino

New development at Orana Park

When I visited Orana Park in September 2005 , they had just started to build a Sumatran tiger enclosure . This is still under construction , and not due to be finished before next summer . As Orana is a "private zoo" , it does not get any
financial support from local councils , shires or Govt agencies , this project will swallow up all funds not used in animal husbandry or staff wages etc
There are no other projects planned at this stage .

It would appear that there are three females pregnant but no births yet, I am really hoping that Melbournes female is a different one from the one that has given birth twice. Perth also has a female that hasn't yet given birth.

Thats good news Jay, lets hope we get a few females from these births, I see over in Europe they bred a white rhino using AI, its the very first,WOW.

Yep, that's what I mean.
The next stage in the breeding program for whites would be the next generation. It will be interesting to see which youngsters will be mated with each other. A possible pairing could be Tamu, the female calf born at Perth in 2002 and Ganini the male born at Werribee in 2002. This can't happen for a few years yet obviously.

Does anyone know the age that female rhinos can ( or perhaps should) start breeding?

Ben, from what i have read white rhino females give birth to their first calf around the age of 5 - 6 years old.

THats ok, i was probably wrong i am horrible with numbers, trust mark ever me any day
