Why doesn't the Albany-Schenectady-Troy area have a zoo when all other large cities in New York State have zoos. NYC the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, and Staten Island Zoo. Buffalo as the Buffalo Zoo. Binghamton as the Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park. Syracuse as the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. Rochester as the Seneca Park Zoo. Utica as the Utica. But the State capital does not. Albany-Schenectady-Troy area is home about 850,000 people more than Utica or Binghamton areas

Don't forget The New York State Zoo in Watertown. I definitely think that the capital region needs its own zoo. There was talk of building an "Aquarium of the Adirondacks" in Queensbury but I haven't heard anything about that recently.

Only thing that came close to a for the capital region was the Catskill Game Farm but was 56 miles away and adirondack animal land in gloversville is too small and too far away. We need a real zoo maybe like the size of the utica zoo in or close to one of the three cities that make up the capital region.

If you build zoo in New York State's capital region where would you build. I'm thinking best would be locations are the site of the old alco plant in Schenectady or maybe in Colonie. I like see a zoo in of the three cities. The alco plant in Schenectady as problems because its on the river and possible clean up from the old plant but 60 acres of land. Colonie right in the central of the capital region but think location in one of cities is best.

My partner and I have often wondered this myself. But still, the state of NY has quite a few zoos. I wish Maryland had some more that I could visit, but at least I have the Maryland Zoo and Smithsonian Zoo.

A good place to built a zoo capital region is in Schenectady's central park. Large parts of park are undeveloped and are good size for zoo between 10 15 and maybe 20 acres in size.

I'm reviving this thread from the dead because the lack of a proper zoo in Albany is quite apparent.

I've found some good locations of undeveloped area fairly close to the heart of the city using Google Earth so I'm sure if motivated people got together, it could be a reality

I would say primarily population and economic demographics . From a high of 135,000 population in 1950 to that of 99,000 -according the 2020 census- Albany proper , has lost a third of its population.
A zoo is a major public expense - if it to be done properly.
I remember -as a boy- Catskill
Game farm, Warwick Gsme farm and “Jungleland (World) - drive through safari , I believe , somewhere nearby - but it was a private enterprise and did not last long.
I see where there is a form of those Shopping Mall Aquaria near Schenectady - but it is under developed . When proposal for an Aquarium for the Capitol area was mentioned I hoped - based in its proximity to the Hudson River that it would have had a “Rivers of the World” theme with Nile hippos , crocodiles from Africa, Giant otters from Brazil , Japanese giant salamanders , paddlefish from the Mississippi and other animals indigenous to the great rivers of the world.
Alas it was a slap dash affair. But is better than nothing
I would there would be enough civic pride to motivate your politicians to institute a conservationally relevant zoological institution - perhaps a mega vertebrate breeding center for African and Asian elephants and the three obtainable rhino species on hundreds of acres that would attract worldwide attention and a ‘destination location” for
domestic and international tourists

I live in New York City - the five boroughs - and I can guarantee you that, if they proposed building five zoos ( One for each borough) AND an aquarium ( No matter how insufficient) it would have NEVER happened today
IMPOSSIBLE!!!
No
Civic pride, no pride of place . No monocultural society.
We MIGHT have had a zoo - a tenth the size of the one in the Bronx (Built in 1899) and , perhaps,a seal lion pool and aviary in Central Park - though unlikely - and a large fish tank in Coney Island or at the Battery
We did not get a zoo in Queens - the city’s largest borough - did not get a zoo till 1966 and that was in the wake of a World’s Fair of 1964-65 and with a monomanical genius named Robert Moses to implement it
The Bronx would never had a zoo - it would likely be in Queens - on a slightly grander scale
None in Staten Island or Brooklyn either
Zoos are going the way of circuses - over 100 in the 19th century - local amusement parks , wax museums and English kit classes

Ok so I found a Zillow listing for what seems to be the perfect plot of land

Nice and big (213.66 acres) and a fairly central location to the Albany metro area

Now, who here has about $2,390,000 in pocket change? I'll take checks

Call Elon Musk
Animal zoos ( sanctuaries ) are the per use of billionaires not interested in profit (Recall Mr. Aspinall)
Like any cultural institution ( Art museums, historical sites) to do it properly - as a viable contribution to the conservation of genetic diversity and perpetuation of endangered species - it must be a collaboration of public and private contributions
There is no reason we could not start and support - with endowments - , in perpetuity - a Mega Vertebrate breeding center run by a consortium of NYS zoological institutions ( WCS, SI Zoological society , Buffalo, Rosamund,
Seneca Park etc)..and find, somewhere , in that $130,000,000,000 a year NYS budget - the money to co fund this for purpose of breeding Loxodonta - Bush and Forest - Elephas , the available Rhino species and Hippopotamus and Pygmy hippo - in an ex situ facility that could be the envy of the world
And you $2,000,000 is way to low
That buy you a two bedroom condo in Manhattan - MAYBE
