Why so few african leopards in zoos ?

Why are there so few african leopards in zoos, when there are so many amur, north chinese, persian, javan and arabian leopards in zoos ?

I would assume that African leopards are common enough that it's a better use of space for zoos to focus on those endangered leopards. To your average punter a leopard is a leopard.

In U.S. zoos there is limited space for leopards, so the decision has been made to maintain the most endangered subspecies, the Amur leopard.

As lamna says there are Africa-themed exhibits that use the Amur leopards as proxies for the African leopards. Zoo nerds don't like it, but most people don't know the difference, or probably that there are even different types of leopards.
