Wild animal sighting you felt the luckiest to experience?

Sounds like an incredible experience !

I would love to see a brown hyena in the wild and I can only imagine how awesome that day must have been.

Why do you think she was following you ?

Could it have been defensiveness towards her cubs ? curiosity ?
Truly I don't know, they are shy by nature, I believe she was just curious, they are like large puppies after all, no growling nothing just following me from behind the trees ( I think I followed her more than anything lol)

Yes, I think you are probably right, hyenas are very intelligent and inquisitive animals and she was probably just curious.

This is going a bit off topic but relating to the brown hyena, how do you feel about the trophy hunting of these animals in SA and Namibia ?

I'm from boer descent so Antelope trophy hunting is quite common, but canids! horrible!

No, but I mean the trophy hunting of brown hyenas, I've heard that it is quite common in South Africa and Namibia and part of this is because of the impact that their predation has on livestock.

The glimpse of a wild anoa on one of Sulawesi's nearby islands.
(short visual, a running ghost near to small riverine forested habitat)

Plus another wild anoa (in the same month, but no visual this time) calling loudly in the valley below us: on a quiet early morning trail warning not to go any closer and making that eerie call through the rainforest.

Sheer magic!

That must have been an incredibly rewarding experience considering how rare they are in that region !

Capybara in Florida (invasive species), Golden Eagle in North Carolina, otherwise things that are fairly common but interesting (manatee - the one in my avatar - leopard, rhino, etc).

I thought I saw a white alligator for a few minutes.....turned out to be trash lol.

Mine would have to be a Fer de Lance in Belize, in a place where they are considered very rare. On a night hike one member of the group happened to shine their light into the jungle about 10 feet from the path and there sat a Fer de Lance coiled up.

That or my general experience in Costa Rica which included sightings of American Crocodiles, Caiman, Agouti, Capuchins, Howler Monkeys, Spider Monkeys, and watching a Green Sea Turtle nest from several feet away.
