Does anyone know if there are still any gorillas in the U.S. zoo population that were born in the wild? I'm assuming that any that were intentionally collected have died of old age, but I wasn't sure if there were any that might have been rescued from the black market/illegal pet trade.

The gorillas listed below are the sole surviving animals that were originally collected from the wild. As it stands, all others have been captive bred at zoo's, there are none that are recent additions via confiscations or whatnot.

  • Charles
  • Josephine

Woodland Park
  • Pete
  • Amanda

Zoo Atlanta
  • Ozzie
  • Choomba

  • Zakula

Thanks for the info guys, I'm surprised! I didn't think there would be that many wild collected gorillas still alive.

I'm pretty sure the Hogle Zoo has a male that was captured in the wild in the mid 70s.

According to the link I supplied in an earlier post, Hogle Zoo had a male "Tino", wild born in 1973, although this individual died on 27th May 2015.
