Manor House Wildlife Park Wild Welsh zoo

I think they'll be going on separate islands, but that's not official, everyone seems confused by what was said on the programme. I don't think it would work though, I don't know why but I just don't see it being successful. It's also an educational nightmare ;)

I think the whole point in the mix (if it goes ahead) to make more interesting to joe public. Gibbons on there own in a big enclosure can be boring if they are just sitting high in the trees to your average joe.

I've just got back from Manor House today, and the gibbons were housed in the same building as the Black and White Ruffed Lemurs but their enclosure led to separate islands so they weren't mixing.

Cool, did you get any pictures? Welcome to zoochat btw :D

cheers and welcome to the forums.

I visited last Friday . A third island has been created , this is on the other side of the path . No work has started on a house for this . The siamang was sat in one of the two outside pens attached to his house , the hatches giving access to the island were open , Anna R-R and a film crew were watching , but he showed no sign of moving out .

A 'Rhino day House' was being built - an open-fronted concrete shelter built on the slope at the top end of the large paddock . The soil moved had been piled onto the top of the building so you could not see it from the top path . No sign of any other work . Wonder if they intend to run the rhno with the very good looking bison herd . Lots of work will be needed to make the paddock and house rhino-proof .

The mixed lemur exhibit had 4 species - red ruffed pair , breeding group ring-tailed , single red-bellied seen and 3 ? red-fronted ( not labelled and in open pen off house ) .

The place is looking a lot better but there is still not a lot for your money , particularly compared to Folly Farm . I did like the big info. boards .

@Belle- What are the island furnishings like apart from the live trees? is there plenty for the gibbon to climb on? How are the islands veiwed, just from the existing path? Finally are the walled gardens still closed?

Thanks

The islands have very tall mature trees on them , as it was woodland there is not a lot of spread of branches , mostly top growth . I was looking at the gap between the trees on the Siamang island and those surrounding , quite a bit of lopping had been done to create the gap , did wonder if it was wide enough . They will have to keep trimming as the trees will naturally grow closer .

I liked the House and outside wire-covered pens . As with the Lemur Walk-through , clear plastic sheets have been used for the barrier surrounding the hatches opening onto the islands . It was lovely in the wood on a bright sunny day but could be a bit dark when the weather is its normal grey and damp .

The island area is off to the left after the original Marmoset island on a new section of land . The path passes the first two developed islands , the third is on the far side . A lot of soil has been dug out to create the moats .

The Walled gardens are closed with no sign of any development - the plan was to open as gardens without any animals . No sign of the Butterfly House , which was the old Tropical House , being open .

I have been watching this series with interest, i think that manor house is a fantastic site with lots of potential.

In last nights episode they said the rhinos would be coming directly from south africa at a cost of 50 thousand pounds!

They also stated that because the rhino were joining the collection that they would get rid of the bison, as they didnt have enough room. I think this is a real shame, although rhino are a crowd puller i thought the bison herd very impressive when i visited in the summer.

I also feel that removing all animals from the walled gardens (some from quite adequate accomodation) was unecesary. As with cricket st thomas-the walled gardens were the heart of this collection, and also provided a secure area for small and valuable animals. (I think the marmosets will be a target to theives so far from the main zoo and house)

I think they would benefit from a good manager/curator at the healm of this opperation, to seperate anna's idealistic ideas from the realistic direction and management of the zoo.

So does anyone know what's happening with the rhinos and moving the gibbons onto the island

Someone posted somewhere on here that the Gibbon had then been moved into the indoor enclosure of the island a least.

They may not have shown all the islands. It's a pretty good habitat considering the average siamang enclosure in this country, and considering what the animal will be used to.
