Manor House Wildlife Park Wild Welsh zoo

I hope the boy gets better.

on a different subject, the park planned rhino's are they still waiting? what's the current situation?

The rhino house and exibit are ready. They are just waiting for 2:0 to be transfered however where they are coing from is a mystery as the pair that were "thought" to be earmarked for Manor House aren't going there after all

The rescheduled series of 'Anna's Welsh Zoo' starts on ITV Wales tonight at 8 pm .

I have Virgin media. I can't find it on ITV player aswell.

I presume it will be on the ITV Iplayer after the program has been on. From my experience, they sometimes dont even add the page until 24 hours after... I guess its just a waiting game. :(

The first episode featured Steve and Lisa the Siamangs and attempts to get him out onto the island which was finally successful - tears all round then !

The new Head Keeper Ross Brown , from Woburn S.P. , was introduced . He is an Irish guy and I got the impression that he knew Lisa from the past , so perhaps he had also worked at Fota .

The Siamangs diet was changed , taking out fruit , replacing with greens . This was felt to be more natural and less likely to make the Siamangs 'hyper' on too much sugar . It was stated that no primate would naturally eat bananas .

After changing the bridge to the island by two larch trunks with steps on top , Steve made it across , but only onto the grass next to the bridge . It was felt that his past had made him psychologically damaged .

My guess is he may gradually extend his usage of the enclosure though he may still retain some stereotyped behaviour.

Some years ago when Paignton moved a male Allen's Swamp Monkey(not the current male, I think it was the one born at Bristol Zoo) from a small cage in the old Monkey House to the nice little Island complete with tall Willow tree they now have, he used it but I noticed how he would often trot back and forth a short distance along one particular horizontal branch- probably exactly the same distance he was used to in the old cage?

ITV and Head Keeper

The programme is on ITV Wales, in England you can retune your Sky Box to get it. Also The Head Keeper worked at Fota before Woburn - he knew Lisa'a mother and was there when Lisa was born.

Thanks Bryn for confirmation that Ross Brown previously worked at Fota .

Episode 2 last night was mostly about the steps involved in introducing a new female meercat to a group of 4 males that had lived together for some time . Firstly , with the female in a separate building , faeces and bedding were swapped to introduce the smells . Then the female was moved into an adjoining enclousure separated by double mesh so they could see and smell but not touch . After some time one layer of mesh was removed so there could be limited physical contact . Finally they were let out together , with loads of food scattered throughout the enclosure for distraction . There was quite a bit of scrapping and bites but after a while all settled down . Interesting to show the details of this .

In addition Steve the siamang was finally filmed up in the trees on his island .

Episode 3 ( last night ) summary -

A new Tapir House has been built ( no indoor viewing for visitors ) and a large pool has been excavated in the paddock . The paddock is currently occupied by the 3 Bactrian camle so they have to be moved out . This involves letting them out and shepherding them up the hill to their to the new paddock - OK with the adults , the youngster has to be left and then moved later . The tapirs are then lightly sedated and moved down in a Horse-box . To their surprise Tommy who has not had an opportunity to swim in his years at the Park follows new female Rio into the water for a swim .

A year-old Przewalski's colt joins the 2 stallions already there , after some cahsing , biting and kicking they soon settle .

That was it .
