wild wolf pups in California!

I’m a bit confused I only knew Mexican Grey Wolf were found in New Mexico, Arizona, Mexico, and used to live in west Texas.
Where was the information that this subspecies lived in California?

California wolf update!

Lassen Pack: The Lassen Pack currently numbers 7 wolves (3 adults/yearlings and 4 pups). The breeding females GPS collar is still functioning. The wolves have appeared to be traveling widely throughout their territory.

Whaleback Pack: The Whaleback Pack currently numbers at 9 wolves (2 adults and 7 pups). The breeding males GPS collar is still functioning.

Beckwourth Pack: Only 2 wolves were documented at the end of September. The Beckwourth Pack originally consisted of 3 wolves however all the wolves are currently uncollared making it more difficult to track them. Field work is still ongoing and they are trying to radio collar one of the wolves.

Dispersing Wolves
OR-93, a 2 year old male from the White River Pack is believed to still be in the state

OR-103, a 1 to 2 year old male wolf is still in the state. He’s been traveling a lot within the Whaleback Pack territory.

Survey For Presence

California Department of Fish and Wildlife received a compelling report of wolves being sighted in the South Warner Mountains. Field work is ongoing but so far results have been inconclusive.

The link above didn't work for me, but here is the official article from California Fish & Wildlife: CDFW News | OR93 Found Dead in Kern County (ca.gov)
He was apparently struck and killed by a vehicle along the frontage road that parallels the busy Interstate 5. This was in Lebec on the pass that goes from San Fernando Valley (west Los Angeles area) to Bakersfield (high desert). Pretty amazing that a wolf made it that far south.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife released their annual wolf quarterly. There was some new news so I thought I should share it with you guys.

There were 5 wolves minimum documented in the Lassen Pack. This includes the breeding female LAS09F however the breeding male LAS16M was NOT detected with the pack this quarterly. Important to note he is uncollared unlike his mate who is wearing a functioning GPS collar.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife 6 and possibly all 7 of the Whaleback Packs pups are still alive along with the breeding male OR-85 and the breeding female WHA01F. That would mean all 9 members are still alive.

all 3 members of the Beckwourth Pack are still alive but no new activity to report.

OR-103, a male dispersing wolf is still in California. He crossed the interstate 5 successfully numerous times and is now traveling west of the freeway and away from the Whaleback Packs territory.

As previously reported, OR-93 was found dead in November 2021 and the cause of death was a vehicle strike.

California Wolf Update! Been a while since any news was shared about the states wolf population so here’s a quick update.

Lassen Pack: The Lassen Pack had a minimum of 5 wolves documented at the end of the quarterly with one functioning collar on the breeding female LAS09F. LAS09F turned 4 in April 2022 as she was born in 2018 to the Lassen Packs original breeding alphas. There were no livestock conflicts reported with this pack this quarterly.

Whaleback Pack: The Whaleback Pack numbered at 6 wolves at the end of quarterly with one functioning collar on the breeding male OR-85. There was a confirmed livestock predation OR-85 was implicated on March 19th, 2022 and in April 2022 OR-85 turned 3 years old. In April 2022 however, it was confirmed that ALL 7 of the Whaleback Packs offspring born in 2021 survived their first year and are now yearlings making them a pack of 9! The breeding female WHA01F was caught on trail camera and appeared to be heavily pregnant at the time when the picture was taken.

Beckwourth Pack: nothing new to report on the Beckwourth Pack other than one of the wolves in the Beckwourth Pack LAS12F, a female wolf born in the Lassen Pack in 2019, turned 3 in April 2022.

OR-103: OR-103 is Californias only known dispersing wolf and is still in California as of April 2022. He became the first known wolf documented in Trinity County in March 2022. OR-103 either turned 3 or 2 years old in April 2022 as biologists believed he was 1-2 years old when he dispersed to California in May of 2021.

Other: Not California wolves essentially but it’s an update on a California born wolf that dispersed to Oregon. A male wolf born in 2019 to the Lassen Pack in Northern California LAS13M dispersed to Southwestern Oregon in October 2020. In March 2021 he began traveling with another wolf and it’s confirmed the wolf he’s traveling with is a female who was radio collared in December 2021 and dubbed OR-115. Her genetic origin and age is unknown but LAS13M turned 3 in April 2022.

Lake County wolf maps updated

I'll be moving to California soon for a term job. I wonder if I have a decent shot of seeing any of these wolves in person.
It depends on the area. Wolves in CA stick to some of the furthest North counties and really only in rural areas. Usually the only people who see the wolves in person are those hired to track the packs. Most other sightings occur on trail cams. I love to follow the stories of people who set up these cams deep in the woods to capture the packs! One person did so right after the fires up in some of the territory and was able to see some individuals!

Yeah it seems to be pretty rare any of the wolves are observed directly. Most of them are in relatively remote territory and avoid being closer to people. Probably a good thing as they're not exactly in high favor in most of the rural areas.

exactly, i always see people in youtube comments asking where the location of the trail cams are!

Do you know of Randy Robbins Photography? If you follow him on Instagram or Facebook he was able to capture multiple different Lassen Pack wolves on a trail cam in the fall of 2021. Also a local just a couple days ago recently spotted OR-103, a male dispersing wolf in California and caught a video and photo of him on Facebook.

Yup! This is like the main dude I like to follow for wolf pics! Didn't know he got a new video so I must check it out :D I first saw some of his "vlogs" right after the fires at Lassen.

California Wolf Update: a bit of a recap on Californias wolf population…

Lassen Pack: The Lassen Family as of November 2022 had 5 pups born this year to mother and California born wolf LAS09F who was born to the Lassen Family herself in 2018 and father LAS16M, a male of unknown genetic origin. It was also confirmed that a 5th pup who’s now a yearling out of the 6 pups born to the Lassen Family in 2021 survived the Dixie Fire, which was the second largest wildfire in California history. The pack as of fall 2022 numbers 12 wolves with 2 adults, 5 yearlings, and 5 pups.

Whaleback Pack: The Whaleback Family gave birth to the largest known wolf litter in California in over a century in 2022 having 8 pups total in 1 litter. The parents are male OR-85 born in 2019 to the former Mt Emily Family in Northeast Oregon and female WHA01F from Southwest Oregons Rogue Pack. Livestock conflicts however the whalebacks made history for as well as in 2022 they have now killed more livestock per year out of any known wolf pack in California since wolves returned to the state. In total there were 12 confirmed wolf predations on livestock in 2022 involving the 15 membered wolf family as of fall 2022 (2 adults, 5 yearlings, and 8 pups).

Beckwourth Pack: As of fall 2022 there were 2 but most likely 3 members in the Beckwourth pack including a new wolf identified as LAS19M, a California born wolf born in 2020 to the Lassen Family. His father is also LAS16M but his mother is unknown as the Lassen Family had 2 breeding females in 2020.

OR-103: OR-103 went back to Oregon on July 2nd 2022 and was unfortunately illegally killed by a poacher on October 6th, 2022. There is a $5000 reward for his killers arrest.

There Is Good News for California's Endangered Gray Wolves

New wolf pack confirmed in Tulare County

Another new gray wolf pack was found in California, this time they were found 200 miles from the nearest known wolf pack of wolves in the state. There’s 4 offspring (2 females, 2 males) and the adult female is a descendant of OR-7. The breeding male biologists believe was born in California to the Lassen Pack.

Two New Groups of Wolves Confirmed in Northern California

In Northern California, there have been 2 new wolf groups found so far in 2023. A group of 3 wolves (2 blacks 1 gray) that were caught on a trail camera and I shared that article on this thread earlier this year, but the second known wolf group was found near the Lassen Pack and consists of 2-4 wolves.

As far as updates go for the rest of the wolf packs in California.

Whaleback Pack

A male wolf pup known as WHA14M was killed in a vehicle collision earlier this year on highway 97

The yearling male wolf collared in March 2023 alongside his father OR-85 was actually a male pup from the 2022 litter and is genetically identified as WHA12M.

the pack was involved in 15 confirmed and probable wolf predations between January - March 2023. “CDFW deployed a total of nine new Foxlights at one location in the Whaleback pack area during the quarter. “In total, 65 Foxlights were active across five different locations in the Whaleback pack area during the quarter. CDFW deployed and routinely maintained ~five miles of turbo fladry at two different locations in the Whaleback pack area during the quarter and USDA WS deployed another ~0.75 miles of turbo fladry at a third location. In total, five different locations had active turbo fladry during the quarter in the Whaleback pack area. To date, no confirmed depredations have occurred inside of turbo fladry in California. Following the successful collaring of two members of the Whaleback pack, CDFW deployed two Radio Activated Guard boxes at two different locations in the Whaleback pack area. CDFW and Siskiyou County deployed six wildlife cameras in the Whaleback pack area to assist wolf-livestock conflict mitigation activities.” There was another confirmed predation involving this pack on May 17th, 2023.

no new activity reported from the Beckwourth Pack.

California recently released a wolf quarterly on wolf activity from April - July 2023. 4 new wolf packs were found during the quarterly, and 5 wolf packs have been known to reproduce pups this year in the state. Here is the information below.

Lassen Pack

LAS09F (LAS01F X LAS02M) and her mate LAS16M (UNKNOWN X UNKNOWN) had a minimum of 4 pups together this year. The Lassen Pack currently numbers the breeding pair, 5 yearlings and 4 pups totaling 11 minimum wolves. LAS09F was born to the Lassen Pack herself in 2018 to the packs original breeding pair, LAS16M is not related to any known wolves in California and isn’t closely related to wolves in Oregon either.

Whaleback Pack
OR-85 (UNKNOWN X OR-11) and his mate WHA01F (OR-94 X OR-7) had a minimum of 8 pups again this year. This is the second year in a row that the Whaleback Pack has produced 8 pups in 1 litter. The Whalebacks had 7 pups in 2021 and 8 pups both in 2022 and in 2023. The pack currently numbers the breeding pair, 2 yearlings and 8 pups bringing the minimum number to 12 wolves. WHA12M (WHA01F X OR-85), a yearling male from the Whaleback Packs 2022 litter and OR-85s radio collars are still functioning. OR-85 was born in 2019 to the former Mt Emily Pack in Northeast Oregon, WHA01F was born to Southwest Oregons Rogue Pack no later than 2018.

Unnamed Lassen County Pack
WHA05F (WHA01F X OR-85), a female wolf born in the Whaleback Packs 2021 litter had established a new wolf pack of her own in California. She had multiple pups this year with a male wolf not from California or from Southwest Oregons Rogue Pack and the current number of wolves in this pack has not been confirmed.

Unnamed Plumas County Pack.
2 former Lassen Pack wolves born in the packs 2020 litters have appeared to start a new pack of their own as well in California. After being previously mistaken for being the Beckwourth Pack, this new pack which has a minimum of 4 wolves (2 adults, 2 pups), was not the Beckwourth Pack but rather a new wolf pack in California. The 2 adults in this pack are LAS19M (UNKNOWN X LAS16M) and LAS23F (UNKNOWN X LAS16M). LAS19M and LAS23F are partial siblings as the Lassen Pack had 2 breeding females in 2020. LAS23F was also recently collared by wildlife biologists.

Unnamed Tulare County Pack
An adult female wolf (OR-94 X OR-7) and a male wolf from the Lassen Pack (UNKNOWN X UNKNOWN) had 4 pups together this year (2 males, 2 females). The adult female was born no later than 2018 in Southwest Oregons Rogue Pack and the adult male his genetic profile hasn’t been confirmed yet other than through the pups he sired which helped biologists determine he came from the Lassen Pack. So we know the breeding male is from the Lassen Pack, what we don’t know is who his parents as the Lassen Pack has had multiple breeding pairs since they formed in 2017. They currently number a minimum of 5 wolves.

Unnamed Tehama County Pack
3 wolves (2 blacks, 1 gray) are still traveling together in Tehama County but nothing is still known about the 3 wolves sex, genetic origin, or if reproduction occurred yet or not.

Beckwourth Pack
the Beckwourth Packs current pack status is unknown. The pack was established by LAS12F (LAS01F X LAS02M) who was born to the Lassen Pack herself in 2019. One of the wolves she was traveling with wasn’t from California.

In total, 6 potentially 7 wolf packs are now living in California.
https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=215042&inline

The unnamed Tulare County Wolf Pack was named the Yowlumni Pack and they actually had 6 pups in 2023 and not 4. The pack numbers 8 members total and the breeding male was born in the Lassen Packs 2020 double litters and his father is LAS16M and his mother I believe is LAS01F who was the original Lassen Pack breeding female. The breeding female of the Yowlumni Pack is from Southwest Oregons Rogue Pack, was collared and captured for research purposes, weighed 85 pounds at the time of capture and is estimated to be 7-8 years old.
