Another new zoo, this one set in 30 acres of the Halfpenny Green Vineyard area in the heart of Staffordshire, is due to open around Easter 2016.

The park, called WILD Zoological Park, will be divided up into several geographical regions including Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia. Amongst the species that will be included are:

- Meerkats, otters, raccoons, coatis, skunks, kinkajou, civets, genets and Palawan binturong
- Small monkeys (common marmosets are pictured in one exhibit concept picture) and lemurs
- Wallabies, fruit bats and armadillos (the latter pictured in the same concept picture as the marmosets)
- An extensive collection of exotic birds including macaws and Southern ground hornbills
- Various reptiles, endangered amphibians and invertebrates

The information is all taken from the new WILD Zoological Park Facebook page.

Personally I wouldn't say this place is even close to been in the heart of Staffodrshire, given that its less 15 minutes from Wombourne which is most certainly in the West Midlands and closer to Birmingham then the heart of Staffordshire!

At least they will have Australian animals. Unlike some zoo I visit frequently.

No opening date revealed yet - but species that have recently arrived include:

1.1 Bare Eyed Cockatoo from Chessington and Paradise Park
Cotton Top Tamarins
Common Marmosets
Black Tufted Marmosets
0.0.8 Red Necked Wallaby from Combe Martin

A comment on their FB page indicates they hope to open in late May.

This was posted on the Facebook page on the 19th:

We are devastated to announce that one of our southern ground hornbills 'Imelda' is missing. She was last seen in the Pattingham area of Wolverhampton. She's not a dangerous animal but is not at all friendly and is quite afraid of people. She is part of our breeding pair and our male Kevin is very unsettled without her. They are an endangered species and the pair of them are very important to the conservation programme. She is microchipped and if anybody has any information or sightings. Please phone our direct zoo line 07540123917 immediately so we can track her movement. We have spent all morning tracking her and have not seen her for around an hour when we finally lost sight of her. She is fully flighted and in good physical flying shape although this species does spend most of their time on the ground. If anyone in this area see's her, please let us know. The police have been notified, Many thanks

Followed by this update yesterday:
Update on Imelda the ground hornbill***
We received a a phone call from Brewood bird ringers this morning who spotted Imelda and had seen the post on Facebook. Thanks so much to everyone who shared it, over 500 shares and has been reached by over 50,000 people!!!
Our keepers have spent the past 6 hours following Imelda and were able to watch what tree she roosted in this evening. This means at sunrise tomorrow we can take Kevin the male to greet her which will hopefully coax her back. We will keep you all updated but glad we have her in our sights.

No further news as yet...

There was an image of her doing the rounds on Twitter yesterday. Looking pretty positive if they can get to her quickly.

She's been returned! From their Facebook:

Absolutely over the moon to announce that early this morning we were able reunite Imelda our southern ground hornbill with her partner Kevin! She's a bit weak and very hungry so are offering her lots of treats to get her back to a healthy weight but she's fine in herself! Massive thanks to everyone who has helped get her home including our zoo keeping team. The local farmers and everyone who shared our post which had been reached by nearly sixty thousand people and we were able to receive many phone calls with sightings allowing us to find her and get her home! We have had an overwhelming response from thousands of concerned people, but she's safe and the hunt is off so if everyone wouldn't mind sharing the news and letting other people know, that would be wonderful! Imelda's back! So happy!!!

The park has now announced via their Facebook page that they are going to be opening on the 31st July 2016.

One species mentioned in this Facebook post that I have not seen mentioned previously is the margay.
