Wildlands Emmen Wildlands Adventure Zoo News 2021

So, I'm making some zoo guides for greenhouses, aviaries and aquariums in Dutch zoos. I'm working with ZTL but it's not always too accurate

Does anyone have a list of all the free-roamers in Rimbula, Birdy Bush and the Butterfly temple? As well as what fish are held where (Which ones in Rimbula river, which ones in the Dwarf croc enclosure and which ones in the Butterfly temple aquarium)?

I can fix something for you, but it might take a couple o’ days

Recently a female Red-crested turaco (Tauraco erythrolophus) arrived, hopefully she will form a pair with the male that lives in the Vlindertempel/Butterflytemple.

Recently a second female Vicuna arrived from Tierpark Hellabrunn, the zoo now has 1.2 vicunas.

Since yesterday the 3 vicunas can be seen together in their outside enclosure for the first time.

Visited today, didn't notice any news for animals. But I did notice that the Arctic one was closed, it also seems to no longer be on the map. Does anyone know what that's about?

Rhinoceros female Elena dies when introduced to new male on Wildlands savannah.

The new rhino male Limpopo arrived in the park at the beginning of this month and during the past week he was already successfully introduced to the more than 2 hectare large savannah and the various animal species, such as zebras, wildebeests and giraffes. There were no problems at all and the introduction went beyond expectations.

Today the most exciting introduction was planned. That of Limpopo with the two rhino ladies (and sisters) Elena and Zahra, with whom he would be allowed to breed in the future. The three have already been able to smell and see each other behind the scenes, each in their own part of the stable. The first meeting on the savannah started extra early this morning and before the opening of the park. Around 7.45 a.m. both ladies first entered the savannah, after which Limpopo was allowed to enter the area as well. From that moment on, things got restless: both females were startled by the man and instead of showing him his place, they both ran away. As a result, Limpopo went in pursuit. He seemed particularly focused on Elena, because she was closest to him. After about fifteen minutes both animals seemed exhausted. Elena walked towards a shallow pool of water and, probably due to her fatigue, slipped. She landed on her side in the water and could hardly get up. Limpopo remained standing near her, the animal caretakers immediately lured him away from her. Unfortunately, help for Elena came too late and she had already drowned.
I refuse to pass any judgements, but let me say .... the management of rhinos at Emmen has been a bit under par for the last decade or so

The old zoo at least had traditionele with a good breeding male and several calves for a while ....).

The new enclosure is not yet ready, but the beavers have already arrived. A female came from Alpine Zoo Innsbruck and a male from Moscow Zoo. They will have to stay in quarantine for another month. Both are still young animals. It is hoped that they will have young in a few years time.

It is nice to know they have finally created that new exhibit. The drawing plans were there for a good while.

A nursehound (Scyliorhinus stellaris) has been added in the Nortica aquarium, as well as greater pipefish

Last weekend 3 Russian sturgeons (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) were placed in the pond of Raccoon Creek in Nortica, they share this pond with Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

And big ones too! One of them is already 1.30m long!

I really love this addition to raccoon creek, "background species" are always a favourite of mine, and I already loved sturgeons!

In consultation with the breeding programme, Wildlands has decided to stop keeping a breeding group of rhinos. Instead, the park will keep a bachelor group. The zoo thinks it is too risky to continue the introduction.

This means that all rhinos currently living in Wildlands will move to another zoo, including the recently arrived male Limpopo. After that, 3 to 4 young males will come to Wildlands. When this will happen is not yet known.

For the second time this year a giraffe has been born in WILDLANDS. At the moment it is not known whether it is a male or a female. The giraffe is standing firmly on the legs and is already drinking well at the very experienced mother; it's her fourth young. The youngster will stay in the stable for the time being.

Meanwhile, it is known that it is a female. She has been given the name Mwezi.
