A great start of 2023 for Wildlands - early this morning a healthy baby elephant was born!

The mother is Swe Zin (2007, also born in Emmen / Wildlands), and the baby is a boy. The keepers have named him Nagarr (meaning 'little dragon' in Burmese)

Interesting about the birth was that mother Swe Zin gave birth lying down, which is unusual for elephant cows and has not been observed by Emmen keepers before.

Lion male 'Jafar' moved back to France, because the introduction process in Wildlands was unsuccesful. Wildlands states Jafar and the females were living seperated from eachother, which is not an ideal situation as lions are group animals. Earlier in the introduction process, dominant lioness 'Tia' died, and after that the situation didn't get any better.

A city alderman wants to give Wildlands more room to invest. Saying it will be important for to future. This should be realized by extending the term in which the gigantic loan from the city council must be payed back

A male hippo recently arrived at Wildlands. He is 9 years old. He was introduced behind the scenes to the five females already living in Wildlands. This went well, so he can be seen by visitors from today. It was not announced where he came from.

It is Kibo from Brugelette.

I hope he breeds one or more of the cows because it would, for the first time ever, have six LIVING generations of Nile Hippos in Europe, starting with Kibo's great-great-grandfather Ottokar (born 1968 in Berlin, now at Safari Zoo Mallorca).

Wildlands has since confirmed that it is indeed Kibo from Pairi Daiza. The main purpose of his arrival is to improve group dynamics, as the group had been without a male for quite some time. He is also allowed to breed the cows, but Wildlands does not know to what extent all cows are still fertile as some are already a bit older.

Some short news that came online these weeks: :)
  • On the 25th of May, female giraffe 'Hidaya' and her calf died during labour. Due to circumstances, the birth was not possible in a natural way, and during surgery, Hidaya died under anesthesia. :(

  • Two young seahorses reached their half birthday. :) There is great hope these youngsters will reach adulthood. These seahorses will remain behind the scenes until they are bigger. These seahorses are the first ones Wildlands has been able to raise so far, as baby seahorses are very vulnerable.

  • At least one more common impala has been born since March.

  • A defassa waterbuck has been born at the beginning of this month (June). The calf is male and has been named 'Cai'.

Recently 2 pairs of Red-legged honeycreepers (Cyanerpes cyaneus) arrived from a zoo in Switzerland. They are kept behind the scenes at the butterfly temple in Jungola and will stay there. Special accomodations have been made for them there and their (future) offspring will be released in the butterfly temple. This is a new species for Wildlands.

This week a male White-winged duck (Asarcornis scutulata) was added to Rimbula, hopefully he will form a couple with the already present female.

Last Sunday 2 Greater rheas (Rhea americana), the other eggs are still getting incubated by the male. This is a zoo first breeding for Wildlands.
