Whilst walking with Helly in the moorlands above her house in the Northumberland countryside this afternoon, we found the remains of a curlew nest, with the shattered shells of at least 4 - and possibly as many as 6 - eggs. This species tends to breed in April or May, so finding a nest which appears to have been lost at least a week ago is quite unusual.

Anyhow, this has provoked me to start this thread, where we can post any sightings or evidence we have come across for wild breeding in our area of any species - bird, mammal or indeed reptile alike.

Last spring whilst weeding a border at one of my clients, I found some tail feathers of a female pheasant, this ain't unusual and is often the sign of a fox kill and shallow burial just as I went to lift the feathers and the inevitable carcass out of the ground, the bird blinked. She was sitting tight on her eggs, some 3 weeks later i had another look and found 8 shells, all still in the nest and clean I must have missed the bird and young wandering off.
I never saw them at all so hopefully they managed to avoid the dogs/foxes/ weasels and stoats and fledged out in due course.
