Thanks for that Al,just goes to show how easy it is to add a species in for those of us that don't know names!I think troy and blade are hybrid tigers, binx is a puma and other two male lions!
I can't think of any other collection growing this quickly, huge amount of new funding perhaps? New contacts within the management?
Something has to have happened within the last year or so! I know many zoos who would wish to develop this quickly, with a lot of contacts and offers but no funding for enclosures to hold the animals, however WWP seem to have no problem with this, any ideas?!
I seem to think YWP have done more and are doing more already. Within three years of opening it now has Leopards, Tigers and Lions. They are also expecting to house Giraffes and Anteaters too within the next year. Very nice collection with a great ambition.
The new arrivals from France have been revealed to be a pair of young caracals.
On one hand, it's excellent news that another collection has gone into puma and caracal. On the other, more important hand - why did it have to be another collection way down south where I can't get to it?
As far as I can tell, the best means for me to get there would be to get a train to Bekesbourne and walk 5 miles - which wouldn't be too bad, as I've walked that far to visit Hamerton, but if I'm going all that way, I'm not going to walk past Howlett's to visit a much smaller collection![]()
Red Panda have joined the collection in the form of female, Lushan from Colchester
It is with great sadness that we have to announce that after just a few weeks with us the difficult decision was made to have lushan the red panda put to sleep.
She had been suffering from arthritis for some time in her pelvis and back legs however the severity of her arthritis had been getting worse. in the morning she had been found laying on the floor of her enclosure in great discomfort and was taken straight to the vet. She was examined thoroughly and x rays showed that the arthritis had travelled in to her spine rendering her lower half paralised.
After very difficult discussions with our vet the decision was made that life would be very difficult and painful for her and that this would not be fair for such an active animal. even in her last dah with us she never gave on what was happening inside a body showing how strong these little animals can be.
This event has saddened all of our staff who fell in love with her instantly and in just a few weeks she became such and important animal for the park. however we know that our decision was the only right one to make and can only apologise to any one who was not able to see her at our park.
