The old Parrot House is being replaced by a large, multi-species building that will feature enclosures for Goeldi's monkey, emperor and cottontop tamarins, common marmoset, Linne's two-toed sloth, Southern three-banded armadillo, Southern tamandua and chimpanzees. The latter will be a troop of 8 being donated from a facility in the USA. All the other species are already housed in the collection.

Wow, that's quite jarring -a selection of fairly common South American species then, BANG, "have a load of Chimps!".
 
They will be the first Chimpanzees in Kent since they left Port Lympne many years ago. I wonder if they are generic or pure, and whether the intention is to breed, or just exhibit them as they are.
 
Do we know which USA "facility" the Chimps are coming from ?
Could it be from one of the labs perhaps, or a rescue facility ? I would presume they are not coming from a zoo as it would probably have been named.Also this zoo has dealt with other overseas "rescue" facilities before.

I alike would like to know what origins the chimpanzees have had.
 
The only thing that surprises me rather about this is that Wingham are actually importing Chimps. I should have thought there were plenty available within the UK- e.g. one of the Twycross or Welsh Primate Sanctuary subgroups perhaps? But possibly none are available from such places, while the Yerkes ones are.

I wonder if they will get a contribution from Yerkes towards the cost of the new accommodation . Monkeyworld seem to manage to get this when they accept ex-lab primates .

Yes I believe they are, plus such places are desperate to off-load their ex-lab animals these days, obviously on the quiet if they can! (which is why they did not initially divulge where they were coming from I guess).
 
A female Northern Luzon Cloud Rat is due to arrive from Praha tomorrow :)
 
A damn nice species :) always good to hear of further collections holding the taxon.
 
I was here the other week, and saw where the new enclosure is going to be. Obviously looks like an empty building site at the moment but no doubt will look impressive when it's done. There looked to be a lot of developments around the park with other building work/renovations? (I'd never been before) but I wish I had more time to look around, as I was only there for literally about 15 minutes just to pick something up.
