Woburn Safari Park Woburn news 2012

I opted for a second spin around the safari drive and this time went through the Monkey Forest as I wanted to see the Patas Monkeys and the Bongo. Spotted the Barbery Macaques but the Drill Monkeys were nowhere to be seen. One of the Patas Monkeys took excepting to me pointing a long camera lens at him and sprang at my car = I have muddy monkey hand and footprints on my door - little sod :D

I am going for a trip 2nd April, a Monday, no school hols so should be OK.....(famous last words)
My question. Are these monkeys more car friendly than...........say baboons, if you get my drift :D. I can handle dirty hand and foot prints and even a poop or two on the car, but if they have a record for damage like baboons do then I will not drive through.

cheers for the info posted.

They snapped my aerial.

I've never had any trouble at Woburn - the Barbary Macaques and Drills have never shown any interest in the cars at all when I've been there and the Patas have restricted themselves to muddy footprints!

I would never take my car in with free baboons - they are delinquents :p
I LOVE watching other people having their cars dismantled though :D

I watched others go around Woburn and the Drills, Macaques & Patas are so much better behaved. Generally the Patas only seemed to jump onto a roof if the car actually stopped still, so I kept rolling and they ignored me as a free ride opportunity. But the one who was practicing Freerunning by bouncing off my car door actually watched me point a long lens at him and focus before he took exception. To be honest a few muddy footprints are a badge of honour, I have African Hunting Dog tooth marks in my mudguard from West Midlands (safari park - not just from driving through Birmingham!) and I have no intention of swapping them!

It's mentioned on the elephant database but I cannot find it elsewhere. If its true that a terrible loss that both of raja's calves have died in the same week.

Are these two consecutive still births a coincidence? Or is there something else going on with a common factor? i.e. the EEHV1 virus....

Or could it just be the fact that both females were first time mums, and still births are very common with first time mothers!

How is anyone supposed to know that so soon?
It seems very unlikely to me, though. First, EEVH is usually killing calves between age 2 and 4, not newborns. Second, two stillborn babys are a tragdedy, but far, far too few to be a statistically significant indicator that something else then bad luck is going on. Please don`t start speculating about a genetic problem after just 2 dead calves. The thought alone is ridiculous.

I would say its merely a remarkable fluke that these two calves produced by AI from the same bull were stillborn with a day or two of each other. That's all. I don't think Woburn published the sex of their calf.

I was just stunned when I heard the Woburn calf had been stillborn too. I guess I was trying to add it up. But like it was said earlier first time mother elephants do experience still births, miscarriages, etc. So, this is just simply a tragic coincidence. :( Hopefully they will be able to try again soon. They have three breeding females correct?

AFAIK yes. Yu Zin is the oldest, Damini and then Chandrika.

i agree with the eehv1 theory as both elephants died a day apart and i read on wildpro that eehv can produce stillborns

Why does the fact that it happened within 2 days connect both incidents? It wasn`t at the same zoo and the females have never met each other.

@gorgeousingray: The bull from Woburn, Raja, doesn`t mate the females. So nothing will happen until they start again with AI. Woburn should exchange the bull, but so far weren`t willing to give him up although it is pretty clear that he will never breed with their younger females since they grew up together. Raja will probably show different behavoir with other females, but it seems he won`t get a chance...

Does anyone know how many wolves there are currently mixed with the black bears, on my visit yesterday I only saw one fairly elderly looking one asleep by the fence adjoinining the tigers (i know that doesn't mean there aren't more) . There were at least 6 Iberian wolves in the enclosure adjacent to the main exhibit though.

Believe the Iberian wolves are an adult pair (From PL/Howletts and Hungary) and six cubs from two separate litters.

The Canadian timber Wolves are a mother and two daughters, they are mixed with the American black bears.

The Iberians are shortly to relocate to Blackpool once their new exhibit opens - maybe after that they will open up the fenced off area which would open the enclosure up a bit more.
I saw 3 of the Timber wolves when I visited in March - all looked fine but soggy as it hoyed it down just as the park opened and they were stashing food!
