Woburn or Whipsnade or both?

Hi everyone,
I'm off to Milton Keynes this weekend but don't know which Safari Park to visit (or even whether to try and do both in one day.) Which park do you recommend?
Thanks
Susan:p

I don't know if Woburn is open yet- even at weekends?

The range of species is quite similar at both, but Whipsnade is far more interesting in my opinion and will take you a lot longer to look around. My recommendation would be Whipsnade, and if you know for sure that Woburn is definately open, you could squeeze it in later in the day if you've time..

It is open at weekends only according to the website (10-4) - there's a craft fair on this weekend looks like tickets are reduced to £7. I'm particularly keen to see the lemurs :D which are at both sites - I don't suppose you know which type are kept at both parks.
Thanks
Susan

I think you might still have to pay full price to drive through the animal reserves (?).
Woburn has a large group of b/w Ruffed Lemurs- not in a drive thru reserve- in their 'encounter' area. Whipsnade have Ruffed and (I think) Ringtailed as well- just opposite the entrance. I would still head for Whipsnade first.....

If you do go to Whipsnade, can you note for us whether the MALE Indian rhino is still there? He has been living recently in the rhino enclosure which is the one closest to the Siberian Tiger 'Tiger Falls' exhibit. You can't very well miss him or the enclosure might be empty(he is due to return to Europe)

Also whether the new Indian rhino house, by the exit of the Asian Plains drive thru area, is in use/open yet....

A mission! It will have to be Whipsnade now - won't it -ha. Will let you know on Monday.
Thanks
Susan

If you are interested in lemurs I would recommend Whipsnade as it has a walkthrough lemur enclosure that is quite new.

I've personally never been to either, but if I were in your shoes that'd be the one i'd opt for.

That's cool... You really will have a better day at Whipsnade(weather permitting) as there's far more to see- including a brand new elephant calf..... You can easily spend the whole day there- Woburn Safari Park only merits an hour or two to drive around and that's it.

Personally I would choose Whipsnade. Both parks feature similar sets of animals, but Whipsnade is much more enjoyable than a safari park in my opinion... no traffic jams, good walks etc

The weather forecast is wet and windy - wrap up well !

Hamerton has a 'home made' appearance, is good for rarities (Aardwolf, Corsac Fox, Siberian Weasel, Jaguarundi, Oncilla), and has a covered walkway for part of the route. I often visit, for an hour, on my way back to Chester from the East Coast.

Cheers, Paul M.

Hamerton is good and like zoospud says has a lot of animals not seen in other places. Thats if you like carnivores though

Thanks everyone - by the way does anyone know what Hamerton Zoo is like (near Bedford)?;)

I went to Hamerton for the first time last year and I loved it! :D You seem interested in lemurs - they had at least 4 different species: ring-tailed, black & white ruffed, red ruffed, and collared, which are breeding well and they had a few groups of them.

Like Paul said, if you want to see animals that you haven't seen before, I strongly recommend a visit to Hamerton. The enclosures aren't the best, but the animal collection is superb.

Wherever you do end up visiting though, please let us know what you think. Have a fun time!!! :)

Andrew.

An Indian rhino has just arrived by lorry transport at Chester zoo from Basel- where this male is due to go back to- its possible he could be making the return journey...

Thanks everyone!
I've put a new post up about my visit and I am definitely planning to see Hamerton soon (and Cotswolds!) I love seeing different animals and always try to tie in trips abroad with a zoo - I've been to Paris (Vincennes and Jardin des Plantes - the natural history museum there is fantastic too), Barcelona (a bit old fashioned but I did get to see Snowflake the albino gorilla before he died), Berlin (fabulous, especially the hippo house - does anyone know if the nocturnal house has reopened), Leipzig (very modern but can be harder to spot the animals), Budapest (old fashioned but very nice), Valencia, Prague (excellent Indonesian jungle exhibition - I love binturongs), Artis (more binturongs!) and Burger's (Arnhem.) I also love all the old style buildings at the european zoos - not cages but the wonderful architecture - I will post some favourite examples soon.
Susan:)

Thanks for telling us about your day out, I'll go and read that now! I'm glad you're keen to go to Hamerton now as well as that place is very underrated - did you know that they have binturongs too? When I went last year I saw one eating strawberries, it was one of the best views I've ever had of one. :D

Cotswold sounds like a great choice as well, the new lemur area sounds fantastic.
