White Rhino, Pongola has been PTS at the advanced age of 48 today: Statement from Woburn's Facebook

It is with great sadness that Woburn Safari Park announces the passing of Pongola, one of the female Southern white rhino at the park. Pongola had reached the grand old age of 48 years of age. Unfortunately over the past four months Pongola’s health had been deteriorating and the staff and veterinary team at Woburn did everything possible for Pongola during these months.

She came to Woburn from Prague zoo in 2003, following severe flooding of her enclosure and here at the park, she had always been most fond of her best friend Mirijam, one of the other female rhinos. Following a prolonged bout of ill health, keepers made the very difficult decision that it was kinder to euthanize Pongola for welfare reasons. She will be greatly missed by the rhino keeper team, as well as the rest of the staff at Woburn Safari Park.
 
It is sad and she was looking a bit old and frail on my last trip late 2012. However, 48 is a very good age and it shows that the staff are doing a good job with their feeding and care of their rhinos.
 
to start off two new Amur tigers have arrived named Elton and Minerva.
they still have the elderly pair.
 
Zootierliste is listing the drills as being no longer present at Woburn. Does anybody know whether this is correct, and if so, where the remaining drills have gone?

I noticed this as well, I thought it may be a blip but if anyone else could verify this I too would be very grateful. They were no longer listed around the end of February if that's any help?
It will be a shame if they have gone, they are a fantastic species and were a highlight of the park.
 
They were nowhere to be seen when I visited in February and were not mentioned on any signage or in the guidebook so I presume they have gone. No idea where though...

I think she is from our zoo - Zoo of Udmurtia (Izhevsk zoo). We have transferred one tigress to Woburn some time ago. But in this case she is Minevra, not Minerva.
 
Rothschild Giraffe, Danica has given birth to another calf in the last few days. So far unsexed but both are doing well.. photos on the parks Facebook

If the Drills- which I believe were castrated males, have gone and haven't re-appeared elsewhere, one could draw other conclusions...

Updated today that the calf is a male and has been named Oscar
 
There is also some news on sparring young male giraffes (Mortimer and Mhari). Both evidently born in 2012 …

Any idea on relations?
 
Giraffe births at the park are now upto three, following the arrival of another female calf at the end of July. She has been named Onyx (so this year's babies so far are - Oscar, Orbit and now Onyx)
