Woburn Safari Park Woburn Safari Park (Updates)

Yet another zoo in England will try, and likely fail, to maintain a group of gentoo penguins. I am assuming these will be available only because Edinburgh breeds them like other zoos breed Jackass and Humboldt penguins.

Walk-through penguin exhibits are okay, but I would say humboldts are one of the least suitable species as they, in my experience, have a greater tendency to go for your legs.

I don't know about that, but their use of the phrase "up close and personal" in the PR sheet thing is, surely, worthy of some sort of punishment. It has to be ranked amongst the most hackneyed, absurd and lazy pieces of nonsense which pours out from the zoos of the world...

I'm so glad you said that and how I agree...!! I HATE that phrase!!!:mad: and as you said, its just about the most hackneyed one used by zoo publicity departments everywhere. Any zoos that persist in using it deserve extreme punishment in my view.:D

Note on the release they ask for your comments on the planned exhibit and it's address to the marketing department - says it all really. Typical dumbing down of zoos and aquaria that seems to be happening at the moment. Very sad.

Iberian Wolves.

I'm presuming their original Iberian wolves came from the Howletts breedings?

If so there could be a future problem of inbreeding, as the parents are almost certainly either littermates or closely related, and quite possibly from closely related parents too.

Any more information, anybody?

I don't think mixing humboldts and gentoos is a good idea, they have very different needs in an enclosure and although both are obviously penguins come from different regions in the world. I also don't think a walk through penguin enclosure is a particularly good idea for the penguins but would probably be okay if the area available to the penguins is pretty big.

Food items deemed fit for human consumption (see last section of article). Unfortunately, being the Mail ... it is not known for responsible reporting (viz the hyped headlines ...).

QUOTE:
He said: ‘In September 2009, Woburn Safari Park received a one-off delivery of surplus fresh vegetables from a company due to a stock overbooking.

‘The produce, always intended for human consumption, was within its sell-by dates so common sense was applied, allowing the kitchen to use those vegetables that did not suit the dietary requirements of the animals (specifically: potatoes and onions) to avoid waste.
UNQOUTE

Am I the only one who had a giggle at this? It's a potato within it's sell by date! eat up and enjoy!

Theres a picture of a hippo and calf in the article.... when did woburn last have hippos? and when did they have a calf? (someone at news desk has some old information on the animals)

A big loss for Woburn.
Who will take over his position?
What about the bongo project Woburn was heavily involved with?

The website has recently annouced the birth of an unknown number of Iberian Wolves born in June.

This seems to be their 2nd litter as ISIS lists them as having 2.2. -presumably before this litter- also the Woburn website item says these pups are learning 'from parents and older siblings'.

Also according to ISIS, Howletts and Port Lympne appear to have now split their Iberian Wolves by sexes-4 males at Howletts, 5 females at Port Lympne. Perhaps to stop them breeding- or just inbreeding?
