Woburn Safari Park Woburn !

Nicknames seems to be very popular, perhaps the elephant responds better to commands?

I'm not sure what the reasoning is behind this, but I guess it's something to do with avoiding confusion in the animals if the public shout out names.

I'd say that would be a good bet. Many places used to /still do use commands in Thai or other Asian languages so the elephants won't get confused by the (English-speaking) public calling things out.

Hmm, this gives me a cunning idea, next time I visit a certain kind of zoo I will yell out Malay, nah just kidding,

We have 16 lions: 1 male, 3 castrated males, 3 youngs and the females.

3 tigers: 1male and 2 females separated from the male because he's not pure.

We've got 7 bears, 2 males ( 1castrated and 1 had vasectomy).

6 wolves.

I visited Woburn yesterday and was very impressed, particularly with the Kingdom of the Carnivores reserves. However, I have a couple of questions regarding the animals:

1) I only saw two tigers. Are these the two sisters? Is there still a male tiger at Woburn?

2) I only saw two bears. Are there still seven bears at Woburn?

I must say the huge pride of lions was a sight to behold. Fantastic! :D

Hey, actually, Im not anymore working at Woburn :) I left last september...sorry about that :) I think they still have 7 bears, but they're all the time sleeping somewhere, But thing is to ask the ranger in there, it always knows where to spot the bears.

:)

Sorry for troubling you, but thanks for your reply. Does anyone else know the answers to my questions? :)

es that`s correct, I know that 5 young males bred in Hannover/Germany were sent to Woburn.

Are they going to act as a batchelor holding collection or do they hope to acquire a few females if and when they become available?

I don`t know their longterm plans, but for the foreseable future they are certainly (only) acting as holder of a bachelor group. There are simly no females availible and someone needs to take care of all the males born in Hannover since 2002. Wuppertal has an all-male-group too, their old breeding female died and her 4 or 5 sons are still there, living together.Maybe Woburn can get one female within the next year and form a breeding pair with one of the males, while keeping the others (and maybe new arrivals) as a second group.

Thanks Yassa, I realise females are in short supply. Anyhow nice to see more drills in the UK and at a place easier to reach for myself! :D

Thanks for the info. on the Woburn drills Yassa . There are now quite a few of this wonderful species in the UK , I make it 17 in all . Not certain of the age of the 2 females that have arrived at Edinburgh from Columbus USA , hope they will breed with one of their two males . There are several young females in the breeding group at Lympne , presumably all daughters of Gorbi , the male . Wonder what the longer term plans are for these . Is the Lympne group closely related to the Hannover males ?

1. Edinburgh's website/blog mentions the new 0.2 have come from a European collection. I'm trying to ascertain from the Columbus folk whether their 0.2 have left yet, should hear shortly. The 0.2 at/from Columbus are sisters, maybe 6 & 8 years old. If they haven't left yet these must be different females. It also says Edinburgh's younger male will be moved to 'another zoo'- Woburn?

2. There are now 3(?) young females in the Port Lympne group( another, the eldest, was sent to another European group), they are all offspring of Gorbi x their breeding female (plus a young castrated male which is a halfbrother to them). PL's Drills came from Stuttgart.
I heard PL were waiting on a recommendation by the EEP as to whether to start a 2nd group or relocate related females elsewhere.

3. There are three main 'lines' in Europe- Stuttgart, Barcelona & Hanover but with a fair degree of admixture between the three. Edinburgh's original 2.1 may have come from Barcelona? PL's came from Stuttgart. Woburn's new males from Hanover.

4. I think the UK total is 16 (one female being sent away from the PL group)

Great, they're pretty awesome animals. Can't imagine they'd be seen all too often in that huge drive through though.

They will be lost in there unless they become attracted to cars and hang around the roadside areas a lot.

I've always thought Mandrills would make a good drivethru display but I didn't expect the first to be seen in a UK Safaripark would be the rarer Drill.

I'm sure Knowsley had drills in their baboon drive-through many years ago. I have a feeling they may have had mandrills too at one time.

Between the 1970's when the last male Drill died at Drusillas in Sussex, there were no Drills(that I'm aware of) in the UK until Port Lympne imported their group more recently.

So I'm sure Knowsley never had Drills- they could possibly have had Mandrills but I am almost equally sure they haven't had them either.

I'm talking about Knowsley's early days, in the 70s, and I'm really sure they had drills. There was even a picture in the guidebook, which I no longer have. Can anyone else remember? I'm a bit hazy about the mandrills though.
