On Thursday July 4th a dead canid was found in the Dutch village Luttelgeest. It is thought to be a wolf and if this is the case, this would be the first wolf in more than 150 years for the Netherlands !
I've seen a photo of the dead animal and I'm sure it's a wolf.
The animal is brought to a lab to do some more rechearch on the animal to be 100 % sure about which species it belongs to.

I think a Wolf was documented and photographed in The Netherlands in 2011 or 2012 as well. Be interesting to see if this animal is from the Saxon-Polish population or up from the south. Any chance it's an ambitious Golden Jackel? I've always thought they might get into Western Europe more successfully than Wolves. Exciting news either way. I used to ride the trains through The Netherlands and look out at the polders and imagine some sort of Domestic Serengeti! My minds eye would see Tarpens, Ibex, Mouflon, and Aurochs...with an occasional Row Deer, Fallow Deer, Red Deer or Wild Boar thrown in. Again great news....let's get a pack up to that nature reserve in Flevoland(?)!!!!

Someone once asked "What you don't have Cows in America?".

Hope someone is taking a close look in the Ardennes and the Eifel.

Again a wolf has been seen ( and photographed ) in the Netherlands in the eastern province of Drenthe ( near the German border ). It's prop. the same animal which was seen last week on the German side of the border.

The probability is fairly high that this individual is the same one sighted just across the border in Germany in the last year or so. She is looking for a mate. As 5 packs have had young last year in Niedersachsen, she may not have too long to wait ….

This is a special day for all of us in the Netherlands. I just recently attended a presentation by one of the project members of the Dutch Wolf Study group. Very interesting ….

It is not a question anymore, but it was only a matter of time before wolves recolonized the territory lost in Western Europe and the Netherlands. That day is now upon us. Thank goodness …. restoration ecology of its own accord and on its own terms.
