Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary Wolves at the door

I quote from an article in today's local paper -

' Wales Ape and monkey sanctuary is opening its doors to three rescued Canadian timber wolves .
The sanctuary in Abercrave , Swansea Valley , agreed to home the wolves after they were confiscated by the German Government .
Graham Garem , a sanctuary trustee , will collect the wolves along with nine monkeys .
The rescued wolves will be joining Thunder and Lightning , two wolves already homed by the sanctuary , later this month .'

There is nothing the the sanctuary web-site about this .

According to last night's 'Evening Post' the 3 timber wolves have arrived . They come from a zoo near Hannover which had been closed by the authorities . They were captured by feeding them meat baited with sedative and all ate too much , one in particular was very deeply 'under' , it was 3 days before they properly came to . The paper says they are all aged 15 , quite old for a wolf .

Nine capuchin monkeys were also collected from somewhere else , a picture shows a very overweight individual .

I do wonder why a small UK sanctuary that alreday has a lot of primates living in far from optimal conditions - unless matters have changed enormously in a short period - should be taking on lots of additional animals from the Continent .

Probably because they do not see it that way and if more animals are offered, then they will continue to accept them. A sort of vicious circle really...:(

I visited yesterday and felt happier with the collection than I have done in the past . For a start , they have tidied up the site a lot , which I feel helps . The 3 new Wolves have resonable accommodation and a sturdy looking house was being built , presumably for the new Capuchins . A similar but better replacement for the grotty Marmoset House was on the same site . All the monkey cages have enrichment of various forms - many of the monkeys were searching through the deep wood-chip flooring for scatter feed , frozen drinks in plastic bottles were hanging up and in the larger enclosures fruit had been distributed on trees etc.

A solitary Japanese Macaque was huddled up in its house but the rest of the collection was enjoying the sunshine and looking healthy .

A number of the Chimps they received have since died - though to be fair most were of a good age - the most recent being Joey , ex Mole Hill . Tubman seemed OK on his own , a member of staff was entertaining him with a game , she said he was very attached to humans , unlike Joey .

Several of their monkeys are quite rare in captivity in the UK - Japanese Macaque ( only at Highland WP ) , Olive Baboon ( Knowsley , though theirs might well be hybrids ) and Black Mangabey ( the 2 males are probably the only ones in the UK ).

I have posted a number of photos on the Gallery .

Did they still have a mona monkey?

Which of the other chimps have died?

I do find it strange that there was not a single rescue centre in Germany willing to take these wolves. Maybe it had something to do with the risk of escape given they were not european wolves.

I think the sanctuary should take note of the recent monkey enclosure at Dartmoor. I wonder how the costs over 10 years compare to the steel cages.

Their web-site said that they received a Mona Monkey but I have not seen it there , unless it is housed inside the large building which they use for quarantine .

I think there were originally 7 Chimps from Penscynor , there are now only 3, one that died was the hand-reared female Neusi , also the oldest pair . One of the 2 Causeway SP Chimps is also no longer there .

Joey looked fab when I saw him a few weeks ago :( can't believe he's gone. Poor old boy. I hope Tubman will be ok. Maybe he can be moved round nearer the other guys.

More likely to be due to their love of animals knowing that the only other choices the animals face will be death !

Hi , I have only just come across this forum ,
I would just like to add that I think what Jan and Graham have done for all the animals in their care is simply amazing, and something they are to be admired for.
Yes the housing isnt 5* but the love and dedication given to the animals is worth a million times more than any " posh " enclosure ..
If you really want to help why not give a few hours as a volunteer or maybe hold a fundraising event .. that way you would be directly involved in helping these animals .

I saw Tubman on the weekend .. he is ok , he was never particularly close to Joey and visa versa.. i am sure that if the loss shows signs of affecting him Graham will find a way to solve it.

so can you confirm that joey has passed away? do you know what happened?

Hi Macca,

It really isnt my place to confirm anything , I am sure that in due course Graham will give full information on the website , or maybe if you contacted the sanctuary they would give you some information ..

There is nothing sinister going on , but proper protocols must be followed, I am sure you will understand.

Thank you
