Woodland Park Zoo Woodland Park Zoo News 2018

Correct me if I'm wrong @kifaru Bawana but I believe what you are asking is how is Leo Yola's adoptive dad when she is only two and he arrived in 2008? If that's the case... Leo was a behavioral non breeder. What the zoo would do is allow Vip to breed with Leo's girls and then return them to him. Vip is actually Yola's dad. That's the nice thing about having two family groups... if one of your males isn't a breeder you can let the girls visit the breeder and not have single males unable to rejoin a bachelor group. The AZA has a small handful of behavioral non breeders who are managed similarly. I believe Disney has a non breeder who lives with a younger male he allows to breed. And another case two former bachelors live in a family group where only one of them breeds. I just don't recall where. Kind of cool cases to look at.

The zoo has updated its online map to include Assam Rhino Reserve:

Also, for the first time that I can ever remember, the zoo will be open on select nights throughout the summer. Here is the information that I copied and pasted from the website:

NEW! Evening Zoo, begins June 21 Experience Woodland Park Zoo after hours until 9:00 p.m. at the new Evening Zoo held six nights in the summer: June 21 and 28, July 5, 19 and 26, and August 1. Take a stroll throughout the zoo’s rich botanical grounds and enjoy magical encounters with animals, ambassador animal presentations, animal keeper talks, storytelling, and discovery stations with cool biofacts and nature-inspired activities. An assortment of food and beverages will be available for purchase. Make it a date night or a special evening for the family! Evening Zoo costs regular zoo admission or is free for zoo members.

More baby news! A twin pair of red pandas were born on June 19th! My trip to Woodland Park zoo is sure going to be chock filled with baby animals!(Unsure how long red panda cubs are kept off exhibit though)

I looked for young red pandas but only spotted a single adult high in a tree during my visit today.
