Woodland Park Zoo Woodland Park Zoo News - 2022

When are the hippos leaving? I think their exhibit is kind of bad, considering they don't have access to the Savanna with the giraffes, zebras, ostriches, and gazelles. Also, do you know where the hippos are supposed to move to?

Originally Lupe was supposed to move to ABQ bio park in New Mexico for breeding, but they had an unplanned baby born to Lupe’s planned mate. I don’t know if that changed things but now we don’t know anything about either for sure.

Only reason it's bad is because the pool isn't heated. Other than that, they have a really large yard with grazing space, and they have a greater sense of "psychological space" with the yard looking into the bigger savanna.

In their 2022 Annual Plan to the Superintendent of Parks Recreation, WPZ stated: "We will re-visit our evaluation from 2020 to determine if our two female hippos would benefit from moving to a new home."

They were originally gonna do it in the fall, but they delayed it due to Covid. But as @Elena said, they're reevaluating that plan to see if they wanna do it or not.

They should honestly just remodel the hippo exhibit so it's suitable for breeding. Hippos are pretty cool, even though they're aggressive as hell.

Pretty much a back tracking review right.

Honestly, I would think it is better to have the river hippo in a breeding situAtion. A lot with river hippo remains stagnant

Sloth bear cubs named:

Woodland Park Zoo’s sloth bear cubs named in time for Earth Day

The name of the boy sloth cub is Madhu, which means “sweet, honey,” and Lila, which means “play, amusement,” according to a news release from the zoo. Both names are Hindi to represent India, one of several countries where sloth bears live.

Madhu was named through a community poll and Lila was named by special friends of the zoo.

It's nice to finally get an official announcement, even though 'Forests for All' is about as vague a title as one can imagine for a $20 million project.

Here is the zoo's official press release about the 2026 exhibit:

There's even a direct link on the zoo's website to Forests for All:

It's nice to finally see an announcement on this project that has been rumored for awhile now, although I'm just slightly disappointed that the plan for a New Guinea house was changed to a more general forests exhibit. Regardless, tree kangaroos are still great and perhaps some of those colorful birds may include bird-of-paradise species.

Very interesting how they mix both species of elephants and River Hippos together! I loved the fight so much! The baby hippo in the video named Water Lily, is still at Woodland Park Zoo today. The fight might have taken place, because Water Lily had only been there for a month, and it was maybe the first time the elephants were introduced the new hippo. Also, I loved how Water Lily was hanging out with Kubwa Sana, the giant male hippo and that she was living with elephants just a month after moving in.
