Hmmm.... I suppose that it depends on the city, country and zoo.

For example, here in Oz I have visited many zoos and have seen many keepers and other zoo staff with visible tattoos. Clearly it's not a big deal here.

Maybe metropolitan zoos may be more liberal in Europe and USA, and regional zoos more conservative. I really don't know. But maybe you should do some snooping around at the zoos you would like to work and see if any employees have tattoos. Maybe you can have a chat with some of the employees and casually ask about the tattoo policy.

Also, when you go for your interview, I suspect that you will have your arms and legs covered anyway, so you will be fine. After you get the job and they see your tattoos, it may be discriminatory if they ask you to cover them up; if your tattoo is a swastika, say, worse case they may ask you to keep it covered while in uniform.

At our zoo you would be expected to maintain the same standard of personal presentation that you exhibited when you were hired.

I have noticed that many keepers have tattoos at London Zoo and at other places I have visited as well. I wouldn't have thought it would be an issue, just in case I wouldn't get any in places which couldn't be covered but I would have thought you'd be fine with arms and legs. I think the world is changing anyway, what differerence does it make to someone's ability to do the job?

But presumably if you wore a suit at your interview you wouldn't be expected to turn up to work as a keeper like that.

LOL! I have yet to have a prospective keeper turn up for an interview wearing a suit. Work clothing is supplied by the zoo.

"Personal presentation" is generally accepted to mean things like length of hair and style of cut, amount, placement and subject matter of tatts, size and placement of body piercings - that sort of thing.

While none of these things have any bearing on a person's ability to look after animals, they do influence the way that the public judge the establishment.

yeahh i understand, thanks alot guys. i wont be having them yet and they will be able to be covered with like long sleeves, jumpers and trousers etc but i was just wondering as i didnt want to get them done and then be out of a job in later life. but yeah i am hoping to move and work abroad when im ready so aus is one of my first choices of places to rack up in so im glad they are alittle more open about things.

thanks alot though :)
