Obviously, it is a newspaper article about the book. That still does not answer the question I posed: what was the purpose of posting it?
I'm not sure of the tone you intend but as written it comes across as rather aggressive and insinuating. What is your confusion about the posting? Sooty mangabey made a post regarding reviews of the autobiography of David Gill, you made a post regarding reviews of the autobiography of David Gill, and then Clouded Leopard made a post regarding reviews of the autobiography of David Gill. One may as well ask what was the point in you posting your reply to sooty mangabey.

Awful tragedy and a horrific way to die, her poor family how can they grieve with a facebook / media circus going on!

Interesting graphic of the set up of the tiger enclosures, I have only been in a couple of off show cat enclosures but is it usual to just have a door out into the enclosure? The ones I have seen also had a cage door behind as well? Also are the traps for the enclosure usually operated from inside? It would be impossible if this drawing is correct as you cannot see outside? If these doors were open as stated surely the keeper that went in to lock down the tigers would also have been at risk of attack? Sorry to speculate as badly as the press and the owner but I am interested as to what is normal in the design of big cat enclosures!

It would be wrong for anyone to speculated, bad enough from the press. However, going by the graphic (if true and accurate) then there are numerous flaws. But again, I would not want to say nor would it be right for anyone to say at this present time.

It has been seen that Mr Gill has been noted via the press that he has changed his tune regarding no fault, he has changed his tune and story on numerous times which may or may not help any investigation. There is NO full-proof method and anyone who says that his or her enclosure and workings have no faults must be seen as misguided at best and dangerous at worst. You can not and can never negate 100% the dangers. What has been seen and heard is too much from Mr Gill, let the lass have some peace, give time, courtesy and respect. Now is not the time to say what or who was at fault.

Its possible the independent graphic is inaccurate, they may not have noted safety grills or other security measures. It looks as if they have mistaken a service area for the entire indoor housing, with the dens interpreted as the outdoor enclosures.

I'm sure someone can shed light on best practice design specs for large cat housing but South Lakes will have been guided by licensing requirements which are also often highly subjective and varied. For example, London's new exhibit for this species followed a licensing requirement for 2 outdoor paddocks after an inspector saw a minor injury on one of the tigers in 2008.

That graphic makes no sense, it seems to suggest tigers, leopards and jaguars all share the same outside enclosure.

They do - the same two enclosures to be exact.

I don't understand why there's a big door that leads directly into the Sumatran Tiger housing. Not only that, but how come there's one that only leads in the Sumatran Tiger housing. From that diagram there are two doors- one that leads into the path that brings the cats out, and one that goes directly into the cat's housing area. There are no doors leading into the Jaguar and Leopard housings whatsoever. Makes no sense.

I am confused. I can see a keeper building with one door into one tiger pen, one into another area (unsure of its function) and another into the jaguar pen. I presume there is a door to the leopard pen behind the wall in the diagram. Are these pens outdoors as it looks that way? Do the animals not have an indoor house? The only other strange thing to me is the fact that there are not 4 outdoor enclosures...

the diagram appears to have some glaring flaws in it. I gather that what the artist has shown as barred enclosures (around the house) are actually the indoor housing for the cats, and what is shown as the indoor part is the keeper area. So the doors go from the keeper indoor area into the cats' indoor areas. There should also (I guess) be at least one internal fence shown in the actual outside pen where none are shown.

That's because there aren't 4 outside enclosures, only 2! The species are rotated meaning that someone is locked inside the indoor housing. I'm not sure when the Jags arrived (about 2 years ago maybe?) but as far as I know this has been going on since they arrived!

and judging by a photo in the gallery by JordanJaguar (I think) of a tiger inside its den, the conditions are not great.

Judging by several photos in the gallery, most of the animals conditions are far from great, but the cat situation is awful!

Keen observers of Mr Gill may be interested to read the reviews of his autobiography currently to be found on Amazon: Nine Lives: Amazon.co.uk: David Stanley Gill: Books. The general tone of these is, "quite simply the greatest book ever written; step back Dickens, give up Tolstoy, move away Flaubert - this is what the printing press was invented for....". Really quite extraordinary. The only dissenting voice is from (one of) his former partner(s). She is not so keen. Again, extraordinary to see this played out in the reviews section of Amazon. Quite a soap opera, really....
I just had a read through the reviews on Amazon and it is quite staggering how similar in tone they are. Interestingly enough, well over half the reviewers have only reviewed one book on Amazon. What a surprise :D

The cat situation here infuriates me the Jags are back sharing with Nina a 18 year old Amur tiger, who in the last 3 months has moved to share with the Lions, been sedated for a medical and then moved back with the Jags! The Snow Leopard is now on rotation with the Lions, rumours are when it was sharing with the Jags it nearly escaped it's enclosure, I can't see the Lion enclosure being any more secure as it is open topped an built for Lions

Does anywhere else house snow leopards in an open air enclosure?

Only open topped snow leopard enclosure i can remember seeing was at Port Lympne, before the changes which took that enclosure off show. Not sure if it still holds snow leopard or something else now.

Council called for review of tiger enclosure seven years ago

THE owner of a wildlife park where a Scots zookeeper was killed by a tiger had amassed fines totalling almost £20,000 following a series of issues relating to escaping animals.

A council licensing committee had ordered a review of the design of the tiger enclosure seven years ago due to concerns animals could escape at South Lakes Wild Animal Park, in Dalton-in-Furness in Cumbria.

Enclosure issues are currently being investigated after the death of Sarah McClay, 24, who was originally from Glasgow, after she was mauled by a tiger.

It has now emerged the park's owner, David Gill, was fined by authorities over escaped animals at his Mareeba Wild Animal Park in Australia before leaving the country as his business failed with debts of £2 million.

Police are working on the assumption human error or mechanical failure allowed the Sumatran tiger to escape from its pen at South Lakes.

There were said to be strict controls in place at the enclosure building, which has four animal pens accessible from a staff area where, among other things, cleaning equipment is stored.

Mr Gill has been criticised for claiming Ms McClay died because she broke the park's protocols by walking into the tiger's cage.

But police later said Ms McClay was in the staff area when the tiger first confronted her and it had not been established it was down to her error.

The wildlife park has been at the centre of a number of licence reviews following health and safety issues raised by inspectors.

Council papers show a review of enclosure design was requested in 2006 after "safety concerns" over a condor and vulture aviary and a new bat enclosure.

Escapes of ring-tailed lemur and coati had also raised a number of complaints.

A chief environmental officer's report called for a review of enclosure design to be undertaken "to ensure that animals contained therein may reasonably be contained within the zoo and if an escape were to take place, that the perimeter fence may adequately deter their future escape".

Two years later, a written warning threatening "formal action" was issued following the escape of lemurs.

Mr Gill left Australia after his park in Cairns in Queensland was accused of breaching permit conditions. He said at the time that he left quickly "under deep fear for both my family and my safety and freedom".

He was charged, convicted and fined more than £6000 for three breaches of the Land Protection Act in his absence, two of those involving the escape of a lemur and cheetah and the unreported death of a lemur in October, 2004.

After being fined he said: "It was pure ignorance of the letter of the law that led to these breaches, it was not malicious intent."

In 2004, the Australasian Zoo and Aquarium Association executive officer Jonathan Wilcken confirmed Mr Gill's application for full membership had been rejected after an investigation.

Queensland's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) also investigated the adequacy of a bear enclosure in March, 2004.

Meanwhile, at the same time in Cumbria, an inspector questioned whether Mr Gill's zoo should have its licence renewed following questions around the security of the fencing around the bear, rhino and giraffe enclosures, repairs to mesh fencing and closer monitoring of walk-through areas.

In 1998, Barrow Borough Council was found guilty of maladministration in health and safety after a white rhino escaped from the wildlife park and had to be shot.

Six months after the escape Mr Gill had a total of £10,000 in fines and costs to pay, after being found guilty of endangering the public by failing to have adequate barriers.

An ombudsman ruled that Barrow Council had failed to carry out an inspection of the planned rhino facilities, even though Mr Gill gave "earliest" notice.

It was also held that the council had failed to carry out a health and safety inspection before the rhino arrived and to ensure Mr Gill fully met the conditions of his licence regarding on-site firearms.

The report said: "This is maladministration and allowed the zoo operator an opportunity to introduce into the zoo a rhinoceros without satisfactory facilities having first been put in place to the satisfaction of the council."

WOW it just doesn't end does it!?

What I fail to understand, is why if all these issues regarding security of enclosures and potentially dangerous walk-through exhibits were known about, has nothing been done about it? Surely there must be follow-up procedures if a zoo is fined because something is considered unsatisfactory? Surely slapping someone with a fine is pretty much pointless if no further checks are made to see if the safety hazards have been adressed?

Obviously David Gill and SLWAP are the main offenders here, but it sounds like local council and zoo inspectors could be up to their necks in the brown stuff here... how tragic that a keeper has had to die before anything has been done! Her parents must be absolutely livid. :(

Also Zurich and Luneberger Heide spring to mind. I'm sure there are others too.
