World Cup 2014

I used to love Colombian football a generation ago. Higuita and his scorpion kick, Valderrama and his hair, Escobar and his own goal. Good times.

unfortunately he got killed for that :mad:, those weren´t Colombia´s best times unfortuntely.

I remember that well. From what I read at the time, it was an altercation in a pub that resulted in his death, and not some execution by a betting cartel. I was living in a CONCACAF country at the time, so it was big news.

I am sick to death of explaining to my mum why the final cannot be Brazil v Germany.

@cleusk: because these two teams are going to face each other in the semifinal on Tuesday.

The final 4 nations in the World Cup are all very good (Brazil, Germany, Holland and Argentina) but are any of them great teams??? Brazil struggled to beat both Chile and Colombia in this tournament; Germany drew with Ghana and barely edged past Algeria; Holland needed a last-minute dubious penalty to beat Mexico and more penalties to defeat Costa Rica; and Argentina have won all 5 matches but all by single goals as they have never seemed to hit top gear. Who will win it all?

I am hoping its Netherlands, picked them before it even started.

They managed to get up there. Isn't that quite a bit more than what other contemporary "great teams", including Italy, Spain or the "Three Lions" managed to achieve? I wonder whether any national team that won the World Cup (or historical teams considered "great", like the Hungarian "Golden Team" of the 1950s) just effortlessly waltzed through the tournament without encountering a difficult opponent once in a while?

Well I said from their first games that The Netherlands or Argentina would win and I'm glad that at least one will be in the final, just a shame I didn't place any bets this time around! :p

In all honesty I'm not surprised by Englands early exit; younger squad with limited experience playing together. A team needs time to gel. The Italian and Spanish sides though, never thought they'd be coming back at the same time as us...

I am predicting Germany - Argentina with Germany winning. :)

Argentina for the win, Messi to be elevated to Maradonna's legendary status. They'll be beating Brazil in the final though, not Germany. Take that one to the betting shops folks!

I had a last second change of mind, and these are my submissions for the office pool:

Brazil 1 - 0 Germany
Netherlands 2 - 1 Argentina

Brazil-Netherlands for the final!

With neymar in the hospital, brazil is in deep trouble.I think Alves is still out, too. Germany is stronger now.
A possible Mueller vs. Messi duel would be exciting for the final.

I'd like to see the Netherlands beat Germany in the final, reversing the result of 1974, which I still think was unjust. However my predictions are almost always terrible so it may well be more likely that Argentina will beat Brazil.

That's a long grudge.

(...) which I still think was unjust.

The list of football games one party considers to be "unjustly won" is almost endless. If so, you'd have to compensate the Hungarians for 1954, the Germans for 1966, many teams for 1978 and so on and on... One should forget old grudges for the sake of acknowledging current teams and their ongoing efforts; it makes the whole thing more enjoyable.:D

I feel that this year's World Cup has been the most shocking, the results for one. Portugal, Spain and Italy all out at the group stage! The South American teams have been by far the most entertaining to watch, James Rodriguez has to be the player of the tournament.

My predications:

Brazil 1-1 Germany - Germany win 3-2 on penalties.
Netherlands 0-1 Argentina - Lionel Messi.

Germany 1-2 Argentina - Mesut Ozil, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Lionel Messi.

As much as I like the Germans, I feel that the Argentinians have the attacking edge and they will take their chances.

I m surprised you say the Argentinians have the attaching edge. They have been playing on the counter all the tournament and without Di Maria they are even more dependent on Messi, while the Germans can field Muller, Khedira, Klose, Schurrle, Gotze among others.
