Scientists in southern New South Wales are searching for evidence of a near-extinct animal by collecting the excrement of its predators, as the state government builds safe havens to protect more than 50 threatened species from feral animals such as foxes and cats.

New South Wales Environment Minister James Griffin said scientists were searching for evidence of the long-footed potoroo - a critically endangered species not detected in NSW since the 1990s - by examining the fecal matter of predators such as cats, foxes and dingoes.
