this is a bit last minute, but I just found out yesterday about this competition. Basically, there's a list of 623 species of birds for which you can submit photos of, and the winning entries are published in the resultant book. You can enter as many times as you want, but with a limit of five photos per species. The photos don't need to be of wild birds - I emailed to check because the rules didn't say one way or the other - and there are quite a number of species on the list which are common in zoos.
Here's the catch: the competition closes on the 31 August so you've only got ten days to sort through your photos to see what is good enough to send in. So get looking!
