Worst Mixed-Species Combinations?

Monterey bay aquarium mixes pelagic stingray with scalloped hammerheads though I don't think there have been troubles.

I saw one hammerhead at Epcot. It wasn't to signed to species but I had it down as Smooth Hammerhead as I found a reference to them having that species online, though I have no idea if that was correct or not.

This could be false and might not be verifiable, but I faintly remember being told that in the former New Zealand wildlife park/zoo, "Owlcatraz", there was an attempt at keeping weka with quail (probably either California or Japanese) that ended with the weka killing the quail. Which is hardly surprising when weka will prey on other birds as large as adult Cyanoramphus parakeets.

How do black and Indian rhinos fare in mixed species exhibits? I know white rhinos gave been kept in these but what about the other two?

Omaha mixes Indian Rhino with Pere David's Deer.

The Wilds mixes Indian Rhino with Domestic Bactrian Camel, Indochinese Sika Deer, Pere David's Deer, Banteng, Sichuan Takin, and Persian Onager - although be aware that this is one of the largest zoos enclosures in the world so it's possible that these species may come into conflict in a smaller enclosure.

Conflicts have happened there regardless. A male Bactrian camel was killed by a male Indian Rhino there not too long ago (like 3 months ago).
Can’t forget SDZSP if we’re talking mixed Indian Rhino exhibits. When I visited in 2018, they were kept with Gaur (now Banteng, I believe), Blackbuck, and Père David’s Deer.

I dont know if this has been mentioned, but in Busch Gardens Tampa, the ring tailed lemurs were able to get into the hippo area but the hippo cant go into the lemur area

Have hippos been mixed with ungulates successfully?
It's very difficult, as hippos are aggressive against any hoofstock species.
I don't recommend such mixes.
But in Beauval, there's a good mix between Nile Hippos, fish (from European species) and birds in a large aviary. It works since 2016.

Black Rhinos live with Gazelles in Doué-la-Fontaine Zoo.
I know at least three French zoos with mixes of Indian Rhinos, Axis Deer, Blackbuck, Barasingha and/or Nilgai plus some crane and goose species. All these enclosures have at least 2 ha surfaces.

Not sure if this counts as “mixed species” in the traditional sense, but the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has a lemur island in the middle of their hippo pool.

I believe the CMZ was attempting to mix one of their female hippos with a pair of warthogs, but I don’t know if anything came out of that.

Last time I checked, ostriches were birds.
But it’s not like every zebra mix is a total disaster. I think it depends on the species mixed, the sex of the animals, if there’s any breeding, age, etc.
In Beauval there's a mix of Grévy's Zebra, White Rhino, Giraffe, Wildebeest, Sable Antelope and Ostrich that works since the late 1990's.
All the species breed commonly except the Ostriches. It may be possible because every species has private quarters in the night building, plus several outdoor paddocks. It's therefore possible to separate mothers with newborns (of every animal species), aggressive males or any other individual.
In the past there have been a large breeding herd of Springboks (phased out as a common species, with little conservation value), Lechwes, Egyptian Geese, Marabou Storks and other birds.

I don't know it this example has been quoted here, but there was a weird mix with Chimpanzee and Jackal in an Australian zoo in the 1980's, that have seemed to have turned bad.
It may have been the most troublesome mix ever.

I wondered how aggressive they are with other ungulates. I wonder if they'd mix with Cape buffalo.

I seem to remember The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo once mixed a solitary hippo with zebras, giraffes, white rhinos, and ostriches, all in a very large enclosure. I visited again several years later and the zoo no longer had a hippo, but the other species remained mixed in the same enclosure.

That sounds like a recipe for disaster.
It reminds me an horrible documentary about a reserve in Zambia, that could be pictured as a piece of hell. This program showed many cruel and violent scenes between these species, and also Lions and Crocodiles. Many scenes were really heartbreaking.
The only interest of this film, in practical terms, is that it has to be showed to the anti-zoo campaigners.
