Wroclaw zoo will be holding on to one of the pairs of the Balabac mouse deer they are holding in quarantine for RSCC.
The zoo has received a male Diana monkey to pair up with its 2 females from Twycross.
Angolan colobus, black howler monkey, red capped mangabey and white throated capuchin, have recently given birth to single young.
A group of African wild dog puppies are being hand raised, after their young inexperienced mother rejected them.
The zoo has received 1.2 reticulated giraffe, 1.0 from Nuremburg and 0.2 from Frankfurt, these are the only reticulated giraffe in Poland.
8 Barbary macaque have also arrived, and again these are the only ones in Poland.
0.1 Hartmann's zebra arrived from Munich
Banteng, Dybowski's sika and red river hog were also born, towards the end of last summer.

I can see the hand of the new director at play. This man needs a medal (as it should have for Zoo Poznan (New Zoo). This follows on from having the zoo come away from the Municipality.
 
I hope he also will manage to get the parc next to the zoo to include it. Because there space is getting a bit limited and although the land area is not that big it would give them some air.

Annual attendance for last years:
2006 - 389.518 (last year of director A. Gucwinski)
2007 - 472.260 (first year of director R. Ratajszczak)
2008 - 559.544
I have no official data for 2009, but it should be more than in previous year

The number of visitors gre in the 2009 to 670.000. Over 300.000+ in three years, not too bad.
Balabac mouse deer was born here and is now over two months old. Fingers crossed.
New species for the Arovy Madagasikara Pavillion are; giant tenrecs, mouse lemurs, Henkel's flat tailed gecko, Zonosaurus maximus, Liotherodon madagascariensis, Madagascarophis meridionalis, Phelsuma standingii, Chamaeleo pardalis, a numer of inverts (scorpions, millipedes, centipedes and spiders) expected as well as birds. Opening scheduled for 12th of May.
Mishmi takin female born recently and victoria crowned pigeon hatched yesterday.

Hey. Do you think that attendance figure of Wroclaw zoo will go over 1.000.000 within next few years?
 
Hopefully yes, with a possible stagnation in 2010 caused by sharp entrance price rise. Surely after opening Africarium there shall be well over 1 million.
 
2.0 Sumatran tigers have arrived at Wroclaw zoo from Naturzoo Rheine in Germany, they are 2 brothers called Tebo and Tenga.
 
1.4 Libyan barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia Fassini) have joined the collection from Barcelona, making these the only captives of their kind in Europe, outside of Spain.

New arrivals for the Madagascar pavillion include Bell's hingeback turtles from Amneville in France and a narrow striped mongoose from Wissel in the Netherlands.

Tumku the hybrid male orang utan died aged 38, he was born in Jersey in 1972

The 3 Philippine chevrotain have been moved to a new outdoor enclosure, now that their quarantine is over.

The zoos last Baringo giraffe has been sent to Poznan, and their house will be redesigned for Indian rhino.

Other births include red river hog, Pere David's deer, reindeer, Dybowski's sika, Siberian ibex and African hunting dog.

Any chance more zoos will switch to pure-bred Barbary sheep ssp. including fassini?

Indian rhino exhibit (in old Baringo giraffe enclosure). What time-scale is this development envisaged for?
(I recall they just switched to reticulated giraffe breeding group recently .... Is a new African savannah already in the works?)??
 
I visited Wroclaw zoo at the beggining of this week. The new arrivals - Lybian barbary sheep, narrow striped mongoose and Phillipine mousedeer - were all visible in their enclosures. Not easy to spot mousedeers, but with more visits of their enclosure (next to the gibons) and a bit of luck you can succeed.
Also I have noticed the empty enclosure and no label on the place where white tailed gnou should be...but may be I just didnt see well. The enclosure for yellow throated marten looked like a new one. Another new enclosures (almost done but still empty) were in the place where the pheasants should be according to my map. The pheasants were in the Bird house. The elephant house was closed because of some rebuilt work.

I am curious if the Crocodile House will be demolished because of the construction of Africarium? It wasnt clear to me from the map on the zoo website. I hope not....

This was my first visit of Wroclaw zoo...I didnt see aquarium and terrarium as I didnt have much time, but all in all I have really positive feelings from the visit. Visible improvements, quite big and interesting species collection and feeling of history.
 
Pheasant enclosures are new & I think, they should be settled in the next couple of weeks, probably they do not have all the inhabitants yet.
In elephant house they prepare only some special place where the elephants will be trained so it'll be almost invisible (it's not the restoration of the building).
The enclosure of marten is new, as well as the one of chipmunks.
Crocodile House will not be demolished, it'll be reconstructed and will seat pygmy hippos (and probably mandrills or okapi (we don't have them yet, but few weeks ago the boss said in the newspaper, that our zoo enlisted to the okapi EEP).

New animals arrived last few weeks:
- vasa parrots Coracopsis vasa
- red-shouldered macaw Diopsittaca nobilis
- blue-crowned hanging parrots Loriculus galgulus
- derbyan parakeet Psittacula derbiana
- Mindanao bleeding heart Gallicolumba criniger
- red-billed leiothrix Leiothrix lutea
- mountain monkey Cercopithecus lhoesti

Good to know the mouse deer are on show - I can feel Wroclaw calling me back now!

Interesting too about the Libyan Barbary Sheep - I've seen these previously at Barcelona but never anywhere else so nice to see them spreading a bit.
