Zoo Wroclaw Wroclaw zoo news

Plans for this year:
- exhibit for okapis, red river hogs and duikers
- exhibit for cheetahs
- exhibit for wolves
- start constuction of 'Odrarium' complex
- finish 'Dragon exhibit' - part of Reptile House, former storeroom, it will house a few (7?) monitor species

I am planing on visit Wroclaw Zoo in the next couple of months and would have some questions to any zoochatters familiar with this zoo.

1) What is the easiest way to get to the zoo's main entrance from the main station with public transport ?

2) I am especially interested in seeing two species I have not seen before - Barking deer ( Indian muntjac ) and Red and White Giant Flying Squirrel. Are these two species visible for public or being only kept behind the scenes ?

3) On the ZOO forum - • Strona g?ówna (Polish is quite similar to Czech :D) I have found some articles about opening new enclosures for okapis, duikers and red river hogs (next to the bantengs), cheetahs (instead of nilgais ) and wolves ( somewhere in the European fauna area). Are these enclosures being completed and due to opened for public this summer yet ?

4) Are there any plans to bring in any rarities to the collection this year ?

5) Where should the Odrarium being built ?

I would very appreciate you could answer my questions. I am really looking forward to my visit in Wroclaw !!

Thanks in advance

Jakub

Do you known which monitor-species are planned to be shown at the 'Dragon exhibit' ?

Some tips for you Jakub:
1. If you wanna get to the zoo you have to take the bus 145 or 146 (direction Sępolno or Bartoszowice) or tram 2 (direction Biskupin), the journey will take about a quarter (bus is faster) and you have to get off at the stop Hala Stulecia where temporary entrance is. The main entrance is under reconstruction and should be opened around May 1st (check online) so you would get off at the next stop (ZOO)
2. Indian muntjac have the same exhibit with Indian rhinos and hanumans, their winter enclosure is inaccessible for visitors. The whole Indian complex was opened last autumn, I haven't heard if muntjacs had arrived yet. Now we have Chinese muntjacs, they are kept in old deer house. Giant squirrels have their enclosure in old monkey house. If they are awake you'll be able to notice them, otherwise they are sleeping in their baskets.
3. These new enclosures are on the stage of planning. Two first are even put up to tender, no results yet. Enclosure for okapis should be finished in August (if everything will go ok), the one for cheetahs they had to repeat because zoo offered a barter trade agreement and noone was interested in.
4. Any plans? Okapis! Our CEO used to do more than he tell so I suppose he'll surprise us as usual :)
5. Odrarium is planned somewhere between Aquary, enclosure of red pandas and enclosure of lama. Today there is e.g. pond for koi.

Let me know when you'll come, maybe we'll do some sightseeing tour round the zoo :)

@m...k
Thanks a lot for your information. I will be probably coming in early July and for sure I will let you know, I would be very happy to meet any zoochatter and discuss about zoos and animals ;).

Kalat, you're right but they are still behind the scenes so my mind missed its/their arrival due to tufted deer one.

On zoo's website appeared some news about Wroclaw's okapis. They will come from Frankfurt and Antwerp in September/October. They're two males. There are visualizations of Okapi House:

Two enclosures for okapis with public access were used by bantengs. They have already moved to asiatic part of zoo. The third, 'private' okapi enclosure, winter greenhouse and part for red river hogs will be built in service area.
