Teresa stayed on the sidelines almost all time so if you saw two manatees together they were probably twins from Denmark. Although in recent times one of the males often swam beside her.

Indeed Teresa was 22 years old but at the time of autopsy concluded that her teeth and internal organs were very worn.
 
Arek, thanks for the clarification. I'm a little confused about how they reached the conclusion that Teresa was 35-38 years old if her date of birth was actually known!

It was interesting to read the reader comments about this story on Polish news sites. There was certainly quite a lot of hostility towards Germany, with some people thinking that Berlin may have deliberately sent Wrocław an old manatee. One comment even mentioned that Radosław Ratajszczak is Jewish (I don't know whether he actually is Jewish, and I'm sure that it wouldn't make any difference at all if he were).
 
Newspapers often write stupid nonsense. Berlin was unable to send 38 year old female, because the oldest manatee in Tierpark is 28 years old. Just Teresa was very old biologically.
Reader comments are mostly stupidity. Stupid attacks on the Germans. Reader who wrote that Radosław Ratajszczak is Jewish wanted to offend him - a classic example of antisemitism still present in Poland (especially in anonymous comments).
 
This is a jubilee year for Wrocław Zoo. Therefore book was published “Wrocław Zoo 150 years”. Book is bilingual: Polish and German so original title is “150 Lat Zoo Wrocław. 150 Jahre Zoo Breslau”. Authors are well known to many Zoochatters: Harro Strehlow (german part) and Leszek Solski (polish times and pictures selection). Book is quite big: more than 250 pages, more than 450 pictures many published for the first time – rare and famous animals, old maps and documents etc. Book is very informative: breeding successes , hard war and post war times and so on. I think it will be particularly interested for German readers.
 
Of course....Can't wait to get this book.How much is it ?Is alos the Anniversary Guidebook available?

By the way a question. How does polish people about that many german people still name the city"Breslau"? I call the city by her present name Wroclaw, because she carries it since 70 Years. But if the book also name the Zoo"Breslau", it should be ok ?
 
Wrocław always was "Wrocław" in polish. We have to distinguish city name from polish or german affiliation. For me its simple: city name in german is Breslau.

I do not know how much the book will cost - my copy is priceless :) I don’t know whether the price is already fixed. Surely a book can be purchased at the zoo. Where else? Also I don’t know. In Germany by Amazon or Klaus Schueling – it’s only my thoughts.
There will be no new guide this year.
For me no problem with Breslau. In title is 150 Jahre Zoo Breslau and it is right – for half of its existence this was Zoologischer Garten Breslau, for second half Ogród Zoologiczny Wrocław.
 
Millionth visitor at Wrocław Zoo. For the first time any zoo in Poland has million visitors in one year (also Wrocław Zoo in german times never reached this number of visitors). And what will be in the second half of the year – second million? It's possible. Of course it's all thanks Afrykarium.
 
Wroclaw got a pair of Red Duikers from Berlin Zoo-where are these animals kept, maybe togehter with the okapis, like I guess ?
 
You're right. Duikers are kept at okapi house.
Among the recent births the most important is yellow-throated marten (first ever in Poland). Among recent arrivals - sumatran tigress from Chester Zoo.

I'm not sure I recall Yellow-throated Martens at Wroclaw (at least from my 2012 visit), whereabouts are they displayed? Great that they have bred.

They're at the edge of the zoo, near to the keas and castle-thing with the owls.
 
Wrocław got pair of New Guinea short-beaked echidnas from Sandwich. There are first ever echidnas in Poland.
 
A keeper has died this morning following a major incident involving the zoos Tigers: Early reports suggest that the Tiger entered the den that the keeper was cleaning before mauling him to death

The tragedy occurred in the morning hours on Wednesday during a routine cleaning of the enclosure and the cages. The animals are locked in a separate area at the time but it appears that the keeper on duty failed to lock the door properly. The man had worked at the Zoo for twenty years. The accident happened shortly before the opening of a Conference of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Radosław Ratajszczak, the director of the Wrocław Zoo, which hosts the gathering, informed some 700 participants about the tragedy and asked them to pay respects to its victim with a minute of silence. “It is the saddest day in my life,” he said

My thoughts are with the keepers family and the Wroclaw Zoo staff today :(

Today is the first anniversary of the opening Afrykarium. During this time zoo has more than two million visitors - absolutely incredible result. So far none zoo in Poland doesn't have a million visitors per year.
