My family had a children's animal elephant book. X was for 'Xenurus', a former generic name for naked-tailed armadillos (Cabassous)

I've picked one of these xenurus up once when I worked at a zoo, it was quite a heavy creature and its claws quite sharp too (didn't draw blood though).

This may be the book: Animal ABC (Big Little Golden Book) by Garth Williams. It has lots of bunnies introducing the animals. As I wrote this, James O'Brien said, "Down the rabbit hole". Weird

If not then you are in for a treat. It is an animal / plant ABC for adults of some of the most unusual living organisms on the planet and it is excellent.
