Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park New arrivals

Sitatunga have definitely moved down to a new enclosure just before you reach land of the tigers. Only spotted a couple of them though, one male one female, don't know what happened to the rest.

I think the others - the old male, the female & baby died, don't know what of. They thought this female might be pregnant.

Sayan certainly looked well settled on the news just now, out in the enclosure laid on her back with her legs in the air. Can't wait to go and take a look at the weekend.

Me too!

Some photos of Sayan in action early yesterday morning before most of the crowds turned up. After a few very loud charges towards the fence she spent most of the day watching out from the back of the enclosure.

The other photo shows her half of the enclosure, looks fantastic with the waterfall in full flow.

Other great news is that planning permission for the leopard and red panda enclosures has been granted now. By the looks of the South American walkthrough it should be open very soon.

Have any animals arrived for the South American walkthrough other than agouti?

Yes, quite a few. The capybara have been at the park for some time and more recently have been in one of the sheds in the walkthrough whilst the enclosure has been built around them.

They also apparently have some Mara and there were some very nice rhea birds in there yesterday. I'm sure there was talk of squirrel monkeys having arrived yesterday, which would explain the huge climbing frame. Not sure if the old guayaquil squirrel will re-appear in there as well.

There's also an enclosure being built directly opposite the walkthrough which will house marmoset. They're going to love the huge tree they'll have to climb.

There are 4 squirrel monkeys at the moment, 2 males & 2 females.

The male hunting dog died.

Attached is a picture of the rhea, I only saw 3 I think. It's taken through a very close mesh!

The rhea and the climbing frame are all inside the South American walkthrough. There's a fair bit of landscaping, planting and tunnel work that's taken place in there too, and the pond is now full with a bridge crossing over it. Should be a great enclosure when it finally opens.

I can see it being chaos with the public and that assortment of animals to keep track of! It's quite big.

Is it due to open within the next week or is there still loads to do? Thinking of going on Thursday.

Perhaps I am being too optomistic?:D

Wouldn't be surprised if it was open by then. It was originally due to open around Feb / Mar, but a large area was very boggy due to the bad weather.

I can see it being another enclosure where they always have at least one member of staff in there, a bit like lemur woods.

I think unless they rope off the paths they'll need more than one - unsupervised kids plopping in the pool at one end whilst squirrel monkeys are being tormented at the other!

Remarkable photos:

Went Saturday.

In short. The wetlands are not surprisingly a bit dry at present.

The baby camel is looking very frisky and full of life.

The SA walkthrough area should be fully occupied within the next few weeks. The capybaras and rheas are already esconced. The squirrel monkeys will be the last to be integrated. The capybaras are loving the pool!

The baby ring-tailed lemurs are doing nicely but the bad news is that the female ruffed lemur died in childbirth a few weeks ago ( baby had to be euthanased ). They're looking for a female to replace her.

There are four wallabies with joeys ( if that's the term for a wallaby offspring? )

The marmoset enclosure is coming on well.

I saw 2 adult ruffed lemurs on Thursday. Is one last years offspring?

I understand he's missing his mother, which is very sad.

They think she would have had 4 had things gone to plan.

Unfortunately, the birth was during the night and she got into difficulty with devastating consequences.
