Not entirely sure but going by what i saw on Saturday it should only be a matter of weeks (if not days) at most. The signage was up and it seemed to be coming down to the finishing touches - like fitting up the handwash station on the exit.

It appears it'll work on a one way system but still no sign of whether the path will be roped / fenced off. As has already been mentioned on here before it'll probably need to be . . . the squirrel monkey climbing frame alone will be too tempting for most kids if not . . . even i'm tempted to have a go on it!!
 
The mara were in the walk-through today along with the capybara. No sign of the rhea, maybe they were letting the mara get used to things.

I was told July for it opening, they are letting the animals settle down together first.

Camilla the camel who has been on indoor rest after sustaining an injury is now out in a separate section until she is strong enough to go out with the others (someone said this was the plan a couple of weeks ago.)

There's another little guanaco since last time I was there.

Dashed down to see the tigers first thing and so was annoyed that no one opened up until 10.45, in doing this I missed the lions being fed! So be warned! It would help in this case if there could be a sign by the SA walkthrough warning that you can't see the tigers yet!

Sayan and Vladimir were in the opposite enclosures to previous times I've cvisited (Vlad first).

The lions had swapped today - Johnny Junior's in the first enclosure & J Senior's in the end one. This is possibly partly why there were quite active, also JJ was sticking right by one of the females so I wondered if she was in oestrus. Some kids got a very close-up lesson, at the business end, of how lions make babies!

have to agree the opening time of land of the tigers is a little annoying. I've been down a couple of times very early, only to be told it doesn't open until 11am. Without any signs how are people supposed to know? They used to do a similar thing with lion country so i guess eventually they'll just open it at the same time as everything else.

After watching the mara, capybara & squirrel monkeys on the last couple of visits i got my first look at the agouti on friday afternoon. Everything looks to be settling well in the enclosure, but haven't seen the rhea for a week or more now.

Other than that Sayan was still showing her aggressive side, with a few charges at one of the keepers walking round the side of the enclosure. Wish he'd do it from the other side though, then i might get some pictures that aren't of her backside charging towards the fence!
 
I think the SA W-T will be brilliant but am taking bets on how long before they have to rope it off!
 
We visited YWP whilst on holiday last week and was mightily impressed. It's much better than it seems to be marketed as. Very well laid out and the staff were super friendly. Managed to get a few photos so will put them on when I get a minute. Very impressed by the park overall.

I'm gutted to have been down too early to see the SA W-T open and the Amur Leopards. Will have to make another trip down at some point now!

great shots. That does seem to be Vlad's favourite place since they swapped enclosures. The move seems to have helped make Sayan a little more visible, at least some of the time, though i gather she's still proving to be a handful.
 
we went the other day and the park is coming on amazingly. SA viva looks really good cant wait for it to open. whats the round enclosure next to the SA viva going to be for? any news on the leopards or where there enclosure will be?

The round enclosure opposite SA viva is for marmosets. The leopard enclosure is going to be directly behind the tiger enclosure. If you saw the diggers / heavy machinery at the back of the tiger house that's what they're working on. With a bit of luck it'll be up before the end of the summer.

It is the 9th for the full opening. They were doing preview tours tonight though between 5pm - 7pm. It's fantastic in there, the squirrel monkeys alone are brilliant. I was worried that once we went inside everything would run and hide but everything in there seemed as curious of us as we were of them. Can't wait to spend some more time in there getting some more photos.

lol, it did move eventually, but definitely wasn't concerned by the crowd. Hopefully everything in there will remain as friendly and curious as they start to let more people in.

Thanks for the photos. Interesting to note the squirrel monkeys are a mix of black-capped (Bolivian, S. boliviensis) and olive-capped (Common, S. sciureus). Does anyone know their origins? Based on those photos it's either a mix of the two species or a hybrid group.
 
SA Viva is going to be opened tomorrow from 12:30 by "Coronation Street star Kate Ford". According to there website. Looking forward to having a look around.
 
Visited on Sunday for my birthday-the zoo has seen much progress since my last visit in march:

The common marmosets arrived on the 15th July. They were being kept indoors for the first week but were very lively and extremely popular with the visitors. Outdoor enclosur elooks good-a whole tree for them to climb on!

The SA walkthrough is excellent-saw all the animals including an agouti right by my feet! The electronic gates at the entrance are a good idea but unfortunately they broke later on meaning we couldn't get in!

New birds of pre aviaries home to barn owls, tawny owl,vulture, black kites , eurasian eagle owls and burrowing owls.

Sayan the tiger slept most of the time but was acing later sadly. land of the tigers is great though -lots of information and well sized enclosures.

These were the developments since my last visit and are making this a great and very exicitng zoo for the future!
 
So with the opening of SA VIVA what's next for YWP? I know there building the leopard enclosure but looking further into the future does anyone know there plans? Are the talks of giraffes true? And what happened to the red pandas?
