Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2013

Just had another look at the African walk through plan and was wondering what species would be suitable for this kind of "experience".
Any thoughts?

To me it looks like a Chester/ Manor house combo. It looks like ticket barriers will be erected and the shop and cafe left outside the main park. The african villiage I suspect will include the sheep and goats, hence the walkthrough. With the possibility of new small mammal enclosures for meerkats/ mongoose and potentially with other small mammals. (Pure speculation based on plans)

The bear enclosure has been approved and they have submitted a new application for a new entrance and African village.

Might be wrong but I think the original intention was to redevelop the main entrance last year. Perhaps the need to re-house Edinburgh's baboons superseded that? I'll try and find out who Milo is when I visit tomorrow.

I may be wrong but I think Milo is actually the name of the baby born to a couple who wrote on YWP's Facebook page recently:

YWP wrote: "We are all excited about our new arrival today...... watch this space...."

Nathan Berry wrote: "So are my wife and I (Kelly Berry)! Sat in DRI as we type!! What are you having??! Lol"

Nathan Berry later wrote: "Just though we'd give you an update, our new arrival is here! A little boy and we've named him Milo!"

The plans look promising I wonder if they alter the species in the enclosure from bear to another carnivor say wolves, if they need to apply for a change of use for the site.
i hope the paddocks get a bit more tree cover than they show on the plan. I take it there is no public viewing of the interior?

I see the only objection on the planning site was from health and safety:rolleyes: i sometimes wondeer how a HAS officer dares to get out of bed thinking of what could happen to them during the day.

Why would they alter it? I get the impression the bears are going to be a big deal!

I was thinking over time if the bears die out etc I know if you have farm buildings and want to convert them into something else you need to aply for change of use. I was just wondering if the same thing applied to zoo's.
i'm sure the bears wil be a fantastic draw and hope to visit YWP on a trip back up north one day.

Went yesterday. For those who know the place, the bear enclosure is going to be situated where the Animal Action Theatre was and across the whole of the rear of the South American Viva and some way back. Difficult to tell how far back because of the mounds of earth obscuring the view as a result of the excavations. Very large indeed.

Foundations have been laid for a new playbarn next to the new indoor play area and cafe.

The giant anteater looks very much at home with the coatis.

According to Facebook, they have a new arrival. As it is male, it's definitely not one of the big cats. Could be a male giant anteater but that's speculation on my part. Tigress due in a couple of weeks.

It's not Milo, the baby boy, either ;)

The other obvious possibility is a capybara as they've only got a female at present.

Yet another bold move by this place, and yet another reason just why it WILL BE one of the UK's top 10 collections within the next 5 years or so!!

Agreed, a very bold move, and one i kind of predicted on a Whipsnade thread last year, when i said the best chance of seeing Polar Bears in England again would be if a zoo 'rescued' some from sub-standard east european zoos. It was YWP I was hinting at, after their lion venture.
I wish them every success.

Correction it was the 2012 Zoochat UK
Challenge thread.

I fully agree.:) They are bold, innovative and able to think outside the box. I can see it moving rapidly up the UK zoo rankings too. I just wish they could house the Leopards rather differently....;)
