Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2016

Suspect you will have a very long wait for it to be finished, highly doubt it will be finished this year,I would say late next year at the very earliest before its any where near finished!

Great photos of ongoing construction at project polar. Looks like we don't have to wait a very long time for it to be finished after all

A few people today were talking about one of the Lions suffering fatal injuries in a fight recently. Is there anything in this? I only saw 2 groups consisting of 2 males and 1 female, while the third enclosure only had 2 females visible to me.

Well lets hope they have made sure the gas pipe isn't going to crack due to all the weight on it,that it wasn't designed to have put on it!!

The 3 sisters are always in group of 2 as they do fight if all 3 together. One of them is usually 'indoors' and they are rotated at approx 4 hourly intervals through the day.

It seems that people still underestimate this no matter how often we repeat it. I haven't been for the last month or so due to work so I can't be sure but I believe the work that is being undertaken is the opposite side of the enclosure to the gas main. It may be a case of trying to prepare everything else so it can be finished after the main is rediverted. I just hope they don't decide to take the risk as if it backfires it is not only going to be the end of the park but also potentially most of the visitors and local residents.

Been to ywp today (23.8.16) Lots of construction work happening at Project Polar. They are working on either side of where the gas main pipe lies so it wont have any weight on it. (Cave and shallow pond on one side and giant lake at the other side) Today they were lining lake with pebbles and boulders. Looks really neat. Keeper said as soon as this enclosure finished they will start on the next.

More work at the rhino enclosure. Looks like the rhinos are expected early 2017. They are splitting the enclosure into 3 parts. Looks like they are create a muddy bog area for the rhinos aswell

I'd agree that we hope they dont take the risk, but I consider that highly unlikely. The HSE did reject YWPs application to build the polar bear house, but was overturned by the Council in their Officer report. Wrt to HSE's concerns, the report states:

"Objection has been received from the Health and Safety Executive due to the siting of a major gas pipeline through the site and the safety issues associated with this. National Grid are the operatives and have provided guidance on how they would like to be further consulted by the applicant/developer when works are proposed. Therefore it is considered that the permission can be granted with an informalities giving detail of the advice given by National Grid and passing responsibility onto the developer."

Frustratingly no info is provided on the planning application website as to what it requires of YWP. However it is in everyone's interest, not least the four cool dudes living next door, to not abuse the National Grid's advice.

Any news on where the Black rhinos are coming from UK or abroad ? There is potentially couple of females around Britain

Solio - PL DOB 2001 (possible non breeding)

Chanua - Chester DOB 2012

Dakima - Chester DOB 2013

Nyota - PL DOB 2009

Kisima - PL DOB 2012

Some of these could be retained for future breeders but may be suitable here, What do people think ?

I believe Chanua is intended to be going to Flamingo Land

According to the website: https://www.leszoosdanslemonde.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=10286

Solio will be going to Koln and Dakima will be going to Ebeltoft, if true

Thanks, good spot! Having read it though, I'm not sure what they've done? Looks and sounds largely cosmetic. That said I wasn't sure what they needed to do, polar bears might be heavy but there will be 100's of people stood above the main across the site. Perhaps the work was more to make safe a route for the construction vehicles to allow them to do the cosmetic work?!

Project polar - enclosure 3

Private chat with one of the keepers suggested "open within the month", but I suspect they will let the grass get a better hold first...
