Building was definitely continuing on site as of last week. As has been mentioned I posted before the names of species that were listed on the original plans before they were removed and replaced with the code names.

They have also previously said whilst they would never rule out holding any species there’s certainly NO plans to ever hold elephants due to the size of enclosures and the costs of upkeep.

The UK government has said building works can continue if social distancing can be achieved. It will impact some work, esp buildings where you have tight space.

Alright, I took the enquiry regarding if they were allowed to continue to build not whether they could afford to build! Which you conveniently clipped out of your quoted post!

The UK government has said building works can continue if social distancing can be achieved. It will impact some work, esp buildings where you have tight space.
 
With regards to the planned Panatal exhibit do you think we will see any relocation of existing species into new enclosures in this area, along side new species. Or would we guess all new species - creating a South American zone in each side of the park?

If the proposed species are the same as those initially seen on plans which were then removed then it would appear there will be two separate South American areas within the park.
 
Not really news as such, but interesting to note that YWP have posted a recruitment message on Facebook for the extra catering/hospitality staff for a new restaurant in the extension - most significantly the post confirms that the plan is still for the extension to open later this year.

On the YWP website, Tucked away in all the covid conditions, under food and drink, it makes reference to the soon to open "Ethiopian Experience"

I remember a while back the planning documents gave way to some wonderful speculations ... In hindsight, were we all justified (given those building names and what ensued on line). Did anyone expect these additions over the canal?

As a first phase, it's exactly what was expected I would say. Small, themed groups of enclosures, and a link back to the main park via a bridge over the river and wetlands is exactly as per the planning document. Gelada and hyaena were both widely rumoured early on (I seem to recall the plans specifically mentioned 'Ethiopian Highlands' as one of the sections, which pretty much left geladas nailed-on). It's obviously not everything that was included in the plans, but in terms of this particular area it's just as proposed. I believe work on the new entrance is well underway, so it will interesting to see when that is now completed given the funding hit the park will have taken over the last few months.


EDIT: Plus any 'surprise' had the edge taken off by the fact the enclosures have been occupied and visible at a distance for around 3 months before the lockdown closure anyway! :D
 
I have a question - does anyone know the hyenas' names/genders?

Because it would be nice for at least one zoo in the UK to start breeding spotted hyenas - Longleat's are all male and the females at Colchester are on hormone treatments because the only male is their father.
 
Had a day out at YWP yesterday didn't manage to see the spotted hyenas but did get to see the Geladas (the big male apparently called Harry) I do wonder if they are having anything in the big lake over on the extension looks to be another animal house over the otherside of it. Also spotted although not on the day (pics on a Facebook group) that there might also be a Dik Dik. Looks to be in the other side of the Roloway House and you can see a small run with a gate that leads between the Roloways and the Okapi.

Just been and looked and yep, definitely a Kirk's Dik-dik so unless the poster has somehow got the zoo wrong that's another nice arrival. :)
