Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2021

I believe one of them has to be hand-reared. If two hyena cubs are born in which they are the same gender whether both boys or girls, in nature, the oldest would pick and compete with the youngest leaving it to die.

I believe Maverick is the smallest and the youngest of the two.

According to a video on ZSL's YouTube account, the sea lions will be moving to Yorkshire in the second week of February.

Seal ions were meant to move last week, nothing mentioned anywhere so guessing another delay?

Possibly, or possibly just waiting for them to be settled to confirm it. Time will tell!

Just been on the YWP website and they have updated the park map. It has changed quite a bit and they have added the new entrance area, now called ‘The Yorkshire Hive’ and they have added two new animal areas. First one being ‘Point Lobos’ and the second being ‘Atlantic Forest’ does this give any clues as to new species are joining the park soon? Obviously the sea lions from whipsnade will probably be in the Point Lobos area ? They have also removed the second Project Polar from the map does this mean this area is no longer open to the public?

I would say Point Lobos is definitely California sea lions - the name is of a real place in California where the species occurs.

As for the Atlantic Forest area, back in 2019 Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation supported a project that involved using a specially-trained dog to identify carnivore scats in the Atlantic forest of Argentina - the five species the dog was trained to find scat for were the jaguar, puma, ocelot, oncilla and bush dog.
Looking at the map, the enclosure appears to contain a couple of large water bodies - if I were to guess, I would say that bush dogs will be the animal housed there.

As far as I’m aware this enclosure is empty at the moment and even while rasputin was at the park it only served as a temporary enclosure before he moved to Estonia, I’d have thought if they get more rescues or polar bears that need to be separate for whatever reason, this area will be used again.

Does any know if the hive section is still on track to open in spring ? Was this always the evolution of the extension or has the pandemic pushed them to take the route one approach to get to the new entrance, retail, restaurants , play barns and amphitheatre built to bring in revenue.

Project Polar 2 was originally the rescue and rehabilitation reserve which was used to house the Ussuri Brown Bears, it consists of a large on show enclosure and a smaller enclosure to the rear which although it is just visible from the walkway is far more private, the older female brown bear was housed there and the two younger males were housed in the larger enclosure. The walkway can be closed off to visitors however the enclosure can still be observed by walking to the top of the bactrian camel viewing area, I imagine it is closed off now as to my knowledge it is empty at the moment.
