Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2023

Sad news ** copied & pasted**

It’s with deep sadness that we announce the sudden death of Rafiki, our male Roloway monkey. This loss is devastating news for both Yorkshire Wildlife Park and for the European breeding program. Rafiki’s legacy will continue through his offspring, Kumasi and Dassioko who will carry on doing their bit to save this Critically Endangered species.

One small silver lining is that Kayla has had another baby, visited today and saw her with a new little one.

Just seen on YWP Fans Facebook page that another Roloway baby has been born.
Also from ywp fan page the maras and capybara are now behind the maned wolfs (offshow I think) as the enclosure is being renovated apparently

I was there today - there certainly are maras behind the Maned Wolves in an off-show-but-visible kind of way - but there are also still some maras and the pair of Capybara in the (closed) walkthrough. Maybe they are due to move over as well. Couldn't see any sign of the agoutis or sakis, but that doesn't really mean anything.

The sign on the walkthrough was worded in such a way to suggest there was more to it than a simple renovation, but YWP is never knowingly under-marketed so time will tell - for what it's worth the wording (which I photographed, being a nerd) was: "South America Viva! is closed for redevelopment. Keep your eyes on our website for some exciting news..."

Wonder if they’ll be adding new species to it or less likely moving them all behind the maned wolfs making that area open to public and making a brand new enclosure

Or, using the new area to enlarge the enclosure for the Maned Wolves now that there are 5 growing cubs?

The app has been updated and where the south American viva exhibit was, it now says ‘NEW DEVELOPMENT - COMING SOON’. Is there any rumours or speculation about what this is going to be. I believe it’s going to house a new species and the species who used to live there, will be moved near the maned wolves

Is the new development just over the walkthrough or does it also include the adjacent exhibits for giant otter, monkeys, armadillos etc.

Just the walkthrough. :)

I hope if that is true they’ll make it so we can still see those species properly. Also it’s quite a big enclosure in my opinion so possibly could be room for a bigger species

Part of the new development in the viva exhibit

Three sets of primates, all small South American monkeys.

Think the mara and capybara will move back there as well. It’s being developed as Amazonia

I’m sure it will be quite difficult to acquire another male!
It a pity almost they don't have the closely-related Dianas instead as it would be easier to source a new male- Twycross have three or even four(?) homebred ones, of which two are already mature. But a new male Roloway partner will have to come from Europe- if one is even available that is. Fota in Ireland have them also but probably only a pair and I very much doubt they have a surplus male.

The refurbishment of the South American walk through was well underway today. There’s a couple of additional houses been built and as mentioned in previous posts the signage suggests at least 3 new species of small primate.
The shelter in the middle was being repainted and the pool end of the walk through remains as was, which may suggest that the Mara, capybara and agouti are set to return. That said, I was unaware of the redevelopment, when I arrived this morning and spotting the rodents in their new location I did wonder if they were a new addition to create a more interesting view from the Hotel balconies which over look them - Doncaster’s version of Animal Kingdom Lodge if you will
