Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park now has Yellow Mongoose

I'm actually hoping for big things from this collection. They have developed very rapidly since they first opened, and anyone knows that initially to attract visitors there has to be a sizeable collection of animals from the word go, or people will not come, or revisit (even places like Jersey and Marwell 'filled in' with common species in their early years). So I can understand why so far they have more of the commoner or typical wildlife park species making up the basis of the collection. The acquisition and 'saving' of the Romanian Lions was a threefold success;1. it gave the Lions a good home, 2. it gave the park a major draw, big carnivores, and 3. it generated a lot of good publicity for them and helped put them on the map. The large spacious enclosures they were able to complete quickly for them hopefully indicates that further major developments are possible in future.

I believe the owners/managers have come from a previous zoo/wildlife park background and as such are not novice owners taking on an established or rundown zoo or farm conversion, but without (necessarily) any zoological experience or direction other than to run the zoo and its animal collection successfully. The intention to specialise in endangered species here no doubt stems from that and so I do look forward to seeing future developments.

We all know the score I guess. It will be interesting to see what species they intend to add. Some idea of what plans exist with the owners would be nice to divulge.

I am quite glad as an antelope science man that they have gone into addax (the erstwhile Edinburgh group I believe).

So, what is next?

Cheetah? Rhinos? Giraffe?
What themes: African? Asian? European (an often sadly under-valued collection area in many of Europe's zoos).

Hi mazzy,
Thanks very much for your information it's much appreciated. Sounds really good (as always) and i must make a return visit soon

Thanks again,
Will

Just a couple of quick questions:

Do any of you guys have any pictures you could put in the gallery of the new exhibits?
And have the addax and guanaco moved yet?

I'll put some on when I've uploaded them from my camera.

The addax and guanaco haven't moved yet

Well I've heard lots of ideas from different of people. Tigers - there's a lake that would be partly in the enclosure, giraffes, possibly elephants, an Asian themed area, a small-monkey walk-through, gibbons were mentioned from the start - it's a bit like a game of Zoo Tycoon depending on who you talk to but short to medium term a lot of time seems to be spent just seeing what is available. The one thing they do have is plenty of space to fill.

I think giraffes are a pretty likely addition due to the African Plains which would be spacious enough for them although they'll probably have to build new housing for them

I keep on hearing this rumour about tigers howver I'm confused about one thing-where abouts is the lake you talk about in your post? Is it in the 'wetland' area behind the camels/birds of prey. The guide book seems to imply this may be kept as a nature reserve(although i think they will expand.)
Like youv'e said it really is a guessing game which means it more exciting/surprising when new animals come in but i think this park is 'one to watch'

How is their standing in BIAZA. Perhaps - given the acres of space - they can play a vital role in housing bachelor groups of hoofstock (I am sure that will get them a host of species very easily). :)

I've never seen an actual lake, not sure how big it is. A friend of a friend (don't think it's an urban myth) was told they've put in planning permission for a giraffe house (in front of the ugly Trent Water stuff would be good :) ) and a tiger enclosure.

Then there's the mythical nyala which were mentioned again recently after failing to appear last year.

It's about time the addax moved though, it was on the map at the beginning of the season, it'll be a relief to the poor male lechwe who the male addax keeps chasing.

I'm going to petition for Sumatran orangutans ;)

If you go down to the viewing hut for the wetland reserve (behind the camel paddock) and look over to the far right, you can see a lake there.

I may have missed the post, but does anyone know if the yellow mongoose came from Cricket St Thomas. Also, any truth to the rumour that they are getting flamingos?

We asked about their gender (not sure) but not about their origins!

Flamingos is a new one on me but you never know what is going to turn up!

They've been really busy this week, obviously very well timed that the lion follow-up programme was on Monday. Whilst I loved having the place to myself I am thrilled that it is getting so many visitors as it bodes well for the future success of the park.

Yes, coming soon, from Cricket St Thomas.

Where abouts in the park could they keep flamingoes?
Nice addition though and they seem to have made a good job on the yellow mongoose enclosure.
YWP do seem to get a lot of crickets animals...flamingoes, mongooses, camels, zebras?

In the pond that's been redone by the ex-guanaco enclosure. The house is there already. Not very big, I guess there's not a large number.

Oh right I was thinking of there but thought it would be a bit small but I'd presume there's only a few of them.

By the way you say ex-guanaca enclosure am I right in presuming the addax and guanaco have finally moved?

The guanaco have but they've not yet moved the addax; it's all ready and they'll probably move within the next week.

Cricket St Thomas closed down last year. There is a thread which now has details of where most of their animals were dispersed too. A few species remain at present though its no longer open. Yorkshire WP had the zebras, some camels and now the Mongooses and Flamingoes too?

Ohh i must goo see these!

and Pertinax - They didnt have flamingoes when i went a few months back?

Also - does anyone know where the racoon dogs went? i loved the racoon dogs!

Cricket used to have at least a couple of dozen Flamingos -- can't remember if they were all Caribbean or if some were Chilean. However, I do know they had a Mink problem, so there may not be that many left. I really miss this zoo.
