Chester Zoo Your Personal Vision for Chester

i know....

im just basing it on zoos ive visited in the US and Australia..... itd be alot more "immersion" than the zoo currently is......

PART 2

Mauritius Kestrels removed, in their place, umbrella cocatoos.

bongos, otters, red pandas bush dogs and pudus removed to make an Oceania area

where the bongos where, replace with dingo.

Otters to be replaced by tasmanian devils.

the crane aviary to be knocked down, then joined with the red panda exhibit to create a koala house and outdoor exhibit. The "outdoor exhibit is to be covered by 3 sides and has extr heating and live euclyptus trees.Rock wallaby on the ground. Indoor exhibit holds the Koalas aswell as Bandicoot and a Sugar glider room.

Bush dogs now features an Australaian aviary, featuring cocatoos, Lories, and echidnas on the ground. this is a walk thru exhibit.

Where the Pudu was is now an Numbat enclosure, and there is an indoor enclosure for platypus, based on the taronga zoo "river bank" enclosue.

the kangaroos and cassowerie stay where they are, general tidy up to the area.

Spotted deer area now turned into a new zealand themed "house" inside wich there are maori carvings etc, and exhibiting Tuatara, kiwi, Kea and Kokako.

CURRENT LION, TIGER AND EUROPEAN AVIARY

the Current lion enclosure would be re-developed,still holding Asiatic lions.

The tiger enclosure would be redeveloped for snow leopard and the aviary will hold the Himalayan wolf.

Islands in Danger would be enlarged, and feature about the whole of indonesia, this would include turning the islands into an outside paddock for the house (therefore filling some of the canal in to join these:

the animals it would hold would be:

Anoa.
Babirusa
Komodo dragon
Bali Mynah
Tarsier
Moor macaque
Maleo
bush pig.
Tree kangaroo.

the other islands would be left for lemur theoretically swapping the anoa island and the first lemur island.

now back to the MONKEY HOUSE

this would be redeveloped, as a large breeding centre for the south china tiger, on the largest island, Snub nose monkeys on one island and red pandas on the other.

inside viewing would be for the tigers and red pandas. the smaller areas of grass facing the deer would be given over to muntjac.

the facing deer would then be moved and this exhibit would hold a group of snow macaque and Cranes, in a large rocky area.

the twilight zone would be completley re done, with "world of the weird" as its title, holding aye ayes. this will be its main exhibit in the lobby.

in the open area would not be bats, and it will not be as dark (still be quite dark)

inside will be heated and hold sun bears `( the layout would be different ie, the walkway will be iin a different position.

they would have access to the current tapyir and capybara areas.

the current spec bear enclosure would be given over to Amur leopard, and an aviary, of chinese water birds where the rheas and guancos are.

THE PADDOCKS

this would be cmpletley re-developed into an African safari area. most of the walls will be brought down so that it is one large paddock. it would be based as if you are walking thru a dry river bed. and during exhibited here will be many african animals, again this is an immersion exhibit and it takes over ALL the paddocks including the Tsavo area.

these are the main animals to be exhibited:

Cheetah
Fennec Fox
Serval
Caracal
Hyena
Spur thighed tortoise
Grevys Zebra
Rothschild Giraffe
Addax
Impala
Jackal
warthog
AArdvark
black rhino
meerkat
mongoose
wildebeast

that takes up most of the rest of the current zoo.

the only differene are the two paddocks closest to the TSavo cafe, one of the paddocks has been converted into a house, inside is a pair of Sumatran Rhinos. they have access to the outside paddock, but half of the paddock is given over to visayan warty pig.

Also here is a pair of iberian lynx in an new enclosure and a family of black lion tamirins.....this area focuses on some of the worlds most endangered animals. and is seen as an end exhibit to the zoo. it focuses on the roles of zoos in the past and looks towards the future.

THATS ALL FOLKS

That's a very interesting plan, brokehalo!

It's a lot different than mine because I tried to make mine semi-realistic, but yours is a different take on it.

There are some great species mentioned and in intriguing exhibits (Ratel and macaques, for example).

I do have one query though, wouldn't the south china tigers be able to swin onto the other islands?

Oh, feedback on my plan would also be appreciated, guys ;)

Good map Chris! I was planning on doing the map for mine sometime this weekend, but you beat me too it! ;)

Hey Chris you can't get rid of the spec bears and vicuna they've not been here for long! I like your map. Quite a few on your wanted list have been seen at Chester before:

Binturong
Nile Hippopotamus
Sun Bear
Anteaters
Bat-Eared Fox
De Brazza's Guenon

but it would be nice to see them back. Can you also find room for armadilloes, solenodons, pygmy hogs, mouse deer, zebra and Jentink's duiker, platypus?

I can envisage all those species fitting into my masterplan.;) Armadillos in the Amazon House, Solenodons in a caribbean section of the much bigger islands in danger (with rhinoceros iguana nearby), pygmy hogs would be a good one to go near Sri Lankan Leopard and Hanuman Langur in what is currently the Spider Monkey exhibit, mouse deer with the bats in the Asian Rainforest house, Duiker in the African rainforest house and platypus in a simulated forest stream in the Australian Woodland House. They're some good choices of species to get.

If I could expand this onto new land, I would build a bigger mountain zone, keeping the andean bears and vicuna, and bringing in Gelada and Ibex, and also build a desert area for goitred gazelle, onager, addax, somali wild ass, mhorr gazelle and sand cats.

Despite some of my favourites leaving (buffalo, bears, vicuna, red river hogs, onagers) that's a really nice idea chris. I Woudnt mind Chester looking like that

Chris, did you create that map in MS paint?

I'm trying to figure out the best method of creating my map...

Yeah I did. I stupidly saved it as a jpeg though, to keep the size down. If I'd used a bmp. I could've just given you a blank one as a template.

Out of interest did I expand in the right place? I put the new rhino bit onto the paddock behind where the oryx are now.

My map

I've finally done my map of my project! :)

A couple things that may need explaining;
- Galapagos House contains indoor and outdoor areas for tortoises and an aviary for finches.
- Australia House contains a koala exhibit, wombat exhibit and kookaburra aviary. All with indoor and outdoor access.
- Oceania area contains the zoo's kangaroos, wallabies, cassowaries, emus, numbats, keas and tuataras.

Feedback will be appreciated and i'll answer any questions regarding my plan and maps.

Perhaps you could inegrate Oceana and Australia regions , and call it Australasia , as that will encompass Aust. NZ and PNG/W Papua . There were no animals in your list that could be found in , say , Fiji or Samoa .

A walk through mixed exhibit of kangaroo , wallaby , emu ( at least )
More parrots in an Aust. aviary (but not keas )
A twilight house that has fruitbats , possums and other small marsupials from Aust .
A reptile house that includes tuatara , thorny lizard , monitors , scree skink , frogs , freshies
An invertabrae exhibit that has Giant wetas and whatever large insect or spider the Australian forum members mightlike to nominate
Tui and bellbird in seperate aviary from keas . Keas are somewhat incompatible for a mixed aviary given their insatiable curiosity and strength

Oh sorry, Nigel. The Oceania area is meant to be an Australasian zone. My mistake...

I like the walk through mixed exhibit idea. It will encompass the current kangaroo and pudu enclosures and the cassowaries will be viewed from here as well, but will stay in their enclosure.

I guess I could fit a Giant Weta vivarium adjacent to the old kea aviary (which will be next to a new tuatara enclosure.

An Australian aviary could be built attached to the Australia House and Australian invertabrate tanks could be inside...

A new update:
- Eland are removed and replaced by the Cheetahs.
- Camels and Prezwalski Horses (Mongolian Plains) moved to old Cheetah enclosure
- The African Plains is extended into what was the mongolian plains and an elevated path is built above the existing path.

Nice plans, but I don't think there'd be room for gorillas on that strip of land where the maned wolves and condors are.

I'd add clouded leopard, fishing cat, malayan tapir and muntjac deer to the Asian elephant complex

No where near enought space for all 4 species. Though i guess you could get rid of the animals currently there.
